My wife and I will be coming over from Canada for the first time.
We have a week booked in a small apt building for the first week, in the Algarve.
The second week [May 1-8th] we will travel from the Algarve , through Lisbon, Then the Douros region and end up in Porto.
I really don't care where I sleep but my wife will want a clean room with a bath and a view. I was hoping NOT to make reservations but just play it by ear and book as I arrive in the town for the day. Since we'll be travelling mostly in the mornings we should be at our destination by early afternoon.
Will I find a place just using the Rick Steve's Guide book I have ?
TIA
Bobb
Hi Bobb,
Sorry about that! Could be that most of us on this forum tend to have more experience of the Algarve rather than the rest of Portugal and/or we haven't heard of Rick Steve's guide book. Speaking generally, I would have thought in early May you would find accommodation fairly easily, if you start looking in the early afternoon, but if you can pre-book at least a couple of stays it will allow you more time looking at the places you're travelling through rather than searching for a room. If Rick Steve gives you email/web addresses it should be easy and cheap to pre-book. Lots of Canadians use the http://www.tripadvisor.com forum and you may get better results there.
Lots of luck and I hope you have a great holiday and get to stay in some fantastic places. Post again when you've been as I expect we'd all be interested to know how you got on.

Thanks for your help Rose. I did make a connection with a fellow motorcyclist in Porto who is helping us find rooms in several small towns.
I actually REALLY liked your apt and had my wife talked into it but it was not available when we needed it.

Yes I think Roseweb is spot on. I only know that Algarve as my apartment is in that area. Next time try the Algarve, when I was there this time last year a bowling team from Canada was there.
We ARE staying in the Algarve [Near Carvoiero] for the first week of our time but I wanted to see some of the "real" Portugal rather than spending my whole vacation in a seaside resort which would be much like any Caribean place we have been.
Yes I am looking forward to the sun, bars and food but also want to see some small villages and country side

Hi Bob, Try http://www.visitingportugal.com maybe you can find accommodation from this site. A lady from Lisbon runs this website called debs k she is often on the forums @ a website called INVALID URL you could have some luck from this. Cheers Jayjan
Thanks for the sites. First one looks beautiful and I would love to surprise my wife but 300 Euros a day is out of my range.
Could not get the second site up so I wonder if it is gone.
