Try Pas de la Casa in Andorra. It has a number of good runs for a beginner.

I dont know cost as I have not been for a few years but as a general rule I used to look at the accomodation costs (half boaard) and then double it to include ski hire, boots, ski pas, ski school etc.

As you are a true beginner I would suggest booking a learn to ski deal as these packages include all the tuition and equipment as are generally cheaper than other deals. (Once they have you hooked you will be back).

To go just for a weekend you will probably have to book flight/accommodation/transfers etc separately - there are some French resorts about 1 - 1.5 hours drive from Geneva airport. My partner has taken a 4 day holiday for the last two years - stayed in Avoriaz and La Clusaz. It cost him around £200 but he has his own skis/boots.

If you want to go for a week there are some good deals being advertised in Italy at the moment for January 2008- around £110 per week for flights and self catered accommodation based on 4 people sharing - board hire, lessons and lift passes to add to the cost - approx another £300 for the week. Some hotels for around £200 half board.

I think going for a week will be the better option if you are just learning as it will give you the opportunity to learn the basics (which can be hard work) during lessons but you will also have free time to practice what you have learnt.

Choosing a high altitude resort will help if there isn't much snow.

A great place to learn is Livigno in Italy- excellent ski school instructors who all speak good english. Good accommodation and apres ski. Only downside is the 4 hour plus transfer time from Bergamo airport

Hope you enjoy it if you go.

It's pretty expensive to go for the weekend if you are not sure.

Do a days worth of lessons at one of the snowdomes. (There's one at Milton Keynes, Leeds...and a few others)

You can do a whole day of lessons and that will just let you get the 'feel' of it.
