Have only just seen the question from Feebee about the allowance for scuba gear a few pages back and Darren's answer.

I'd just add that it might be worth printing out the page Darren linked to which says you get 5kg by showing your certification at check in.

On several occasions we've found the check in staff didn't know about this and weren't going to believe us till we showed them the print out. Mostly this has been in the UK on the way out.

It will be a 767, ex thomsonfly in longhaul configuration (283) so 33" legroom and if you've booked extra legroom you'll be in premium(more that likely) with 37" legroom.

That's definately a good idea. If you're travelling to popular diving destinations, check-in staff know about the extra but I've flown through some non-diving destination airports and staff weren't aware of it. If you have the printout to present if questions are asked, it makes life easier although it still took 20 minutes to convinced them at Luxor after being in Hurghada playing with Dolphins for a week!

First let me say I am taking a lot of kit, which I am more than happy to pay for. But I don't understand how Thomson come up with a figure of 5kg free.

If you have a 20kg allowance then the 5kg takes you above the 23kg per bag limit which means you would have to take two bags, so unless you are buying more the extra is pretty useless IMO. I am flying premium so I get 23kg so would still need an extra bag. If you aren't buying extra then the 5kg is meaningless.

Just take 23kg in your suitcase, then 5kg in a seperate bag. That's how I do it. All my diving gear goes in the suitcase with fins on the outside, gear in the core with clothes around to cushion things. Remaining clothes in excess of the standard limit goes in a seperate bag as my 5kg divers allowance. It's not as ideal as everything going in one suitecase, but there are limits on what baggage handlers can lift. Hence the weight restriction. That's how i'll be packing in 8 weeks time. I once took 2 suitcases to Antigua, but then my luggage allwance was 46kg (2x 23kg) on that flight so no problem with what not to take!

As a manual handling instructor I have no problem with weight limits. I am taking 2 bags with a limit of 43kg so no problem

Before they combined with Thomsons, First Choice used to give you 10kg allowance for dive gear. I guess 5kg is better than nothing.
We always end up with 3 checked bags; one for OH's diving gear, one for my stuff and a small bag for everything else OH needs!

Whilst I don't begrudge anybody getting an extra 5 kgs for diving gear, it would certainly pee me off if I was stood in the queue and being 1/2 kilo overweight on my allowance just seeing somebody in front being able to carry more free of charge :que

Does anybody know why this extra free allowance is exclusive for divers? The same argument can be put forward for wedding gear :que

It's there as a carrot for divers to book diving holidays with Thomson as all the others dropped it a while ago. Personally, i'm quite surprised they still have it and didn't drop it under the merger. All other sporting equipment is chargable but it must generate enough extra business to warrent keeping it. It's certainly one of the reasons I prefer to book with Thomson.

Hi Darren, we are looking to stay at the Sofitel in Taba Heights. Can you tell me the aircraft being used on the flight please? The flight number is TOM292 11Oct. We return on TOM293 18Oct. This is from/to Manchester.
Also, we may end up putting our dates back until early Novemer. Do you know if the aircraft will change between summer and winter?

Flew from Birmingham to Bodrum on TOM 266 on 20/6 and returned 5/7 on TOM 267. BOTH landings were the worst we've experienced for a very long time.

ex first choice (v2) usually from Cancun (TOM023) but occasionally Punta Cana (TOM061) they both arrive early enough to be used for your flight.

re PREMIUM flight upgrades - I've now had a second email from Customer services confirming Premium luggage allowance as 23 kgs hold and 7 kgs hand luggage in contradiction of first email last week!
I think they are confusing themselves now with the difference between a Premier package holiday which used to carry the uprated allowances and an actual flight upgrade to Premium which still does!!!! :yikes
