Hi Fergal
It depends on exactly what you want to do, but as well as rep trips and organised trips from high street operators, Barcelona is very managable on your own. You can get the train from Salou which takes between an hour and hour and a half from what I remember. Also I think you can get a bus. If budget is a consideration this is probably the cheapest option of all.
I'm sure someone else on here has names of offices in Salou that undercut the reps if you want something more structured than DIY.

definitely D-I-Y. Train from Salou takes 1 hour 20 minutes, costs 9 euros return and gets you right into the heart of Barcelona at Passeig De Gracias - three minutes walk from the top of the Ramblas. I saw bus trips for around 17 euros and the one offered to us with First Choice was about 40 euros.
Spend the money on a guidebook of Barcelona before you go and then head down to the railway station in Salou, thats what I say!

Hi..Ive been on most of the Barcelona organised tours, but not on bus or train . You can sort trips out at the plana bus kiosk opposite mcdonalds on the prom , also book or catch bus for barcelona. As far as I know the cheapest way for tours. Last year we paid about £90 for 3 adults and a child to go Barcelona for the day , tour of stadium included
