I don't think you need them according to the advice given by the Foreign Office.

However, next time you visit the doctor, ask him/her - they're the specialists

Went for my typhoid and hep jabs yesterday at docs ready for my visit to Cuba in August,he told me to make sure I was taking Malaria tablets as one infected bite will be potentially dangerous. The wifes doctor told her not to worry bout Malaria in Cuba as its the Dom Rep that has the Malaria problem. Not sure whether to take my own docs advice or leave it??

I visited Cuba in March and my doctor told me I didn't need to take Malaria tablets though she did say that there have been reported cases of malaria recently in Jamaica and I think she said Dom Republic.

Hi there,

Hope some one can help me.
2 adults and a 6 yr old going to Riveria Maya in less than 2 weeks.
I have only just thought about what we would need to take before we go re: any jags or malaria tablets.
I know I am leaving it a bit late but I only just booked the holiday at the weekend !

The nurse at my GP's pratice is on holiday and I cant make an appt to see the doctor as the receptionist told me that the doctors dont deal with these kinds of things.

Had a look at some of the posts on here but nothing really answers my questions.

Many thanks for you help.

Kim.

Can anybody tell me whether you need to get any jabs before you go to Cuba? I have heard of the incredible mosquito population and am pretty certain they are no the malaria carrying sort but they are bound to have other nasty germs or am i just paranoid? Also could anybody reccomend what my partener and i should be looking for regarding cover on our travel insurance and whether there are any advantages/disadvantages to getting couples insurance apart from the cost saving? Any help on any of these subjects would be greatly appreciated, thanks. :ghug :omg

mikey30,

No need to make a docs appointment for going to Cuba. For more info, visit the FCO's website. For more information on travel insurance, refer to the Insurance thread. You are after a 'comprehensive travel policy' that covers worldwide travel but make sure you read the small print to ensure it covers anything you may want to tale part in while on hols.

Have a great time, Cuba is a fantastic country.

Pick up the Travellers Guide to Health from your local Post Office and it should have all the information you need.

jules

i went to the docs last week for my jabs etc as we are going to cozumel in 6 weeks time.

need the same for cozumel as you do for cancun.

the nurse made sure i was up to date on the following:

typhoid
hepatitis b
tetanus
diptheria
polio

and malaria tablets were not advised

and no need to panic at having loads of needles as you get about 3 vaccinations in 1 dose these days lol

AVLOCLOR!!

I have been back from Punta Cana DRepublic for over a week now. I have been taking Avloclor & omg!! 1st week (week before going) i was fine. Took 2nd dose on the day of leaving & 2 days into my holiday my stomach started & i had diarrhea which lasted about a day & a half which wasn't too bad i suppose.

After the week holiday we return home & i take my 3rd dose then again 2 days later the diarrhea followed by stomach cramps, followed by nausea followed by blurred vision. Time for my 4th dose (what do i do) , i decide to continue so took the 4th dose, still feel the same now & ontop of all the other stuff i am getting dizzy spells & basically get flushes now and again & feelings of being high which lasts for seconds but many times a day. The other stuff happens throughout the day. I have now stopped eating & started drinking water only hoping it helps but i very much doubt it as i still feel the same after 9 hrs without food.

I would stop taking them but i got bit a couple times. I would see the doc but i am in another country visiting family (i went to visit family, booked a holiday to punta cana with them, came back with family & am here for another month). I have travel insurance but not sure if i will be covered. I got it for my family visit to cover my whole stay but not for the Dominican so if i was to see a doc here would i be covered because i am here or would i not be covered because it is because of medication for going to the Domincan.

Anyway, i will try sticking this out for the remaining 2 weeks but honestly, be prepared to face side effects. Many have none but like myself , some have more than others. My blurred vision is very worrying as i cannot read things close up it is all out of focus kinda thing.

You need to seek proper medical advice. Nobody here will be able to give you that advice I'm afraid :?

HI, just back from Mexico and didn't need any vaccinations before I went (nor tablets). Likewise when I went to the Dom Rep 3 years ago. Just make sure you're up to date on your normal Tetanus, diptheria, polio. Relax and have fun!
Reply
@shirley h, you do need Malaria pills for Dominican & in Mexico you need them for Cozumel.

You also need vaccinations.

What you need are:-
HEPATITIS A
POLIO
TETANUS
TYPHOID
