Anythng valuable or delicate should go in your hand luggage. Just wait until you see how the baggage handlers throw your suitcases around - then you'll see why

definitely hand luggage- dont think insurance covers them whilst in checked baggage.

We just came back from Poland and had cameras in our hand luggage. The security coming back was very strict and they got us to switch on the cameras (presumably to check they were actually cameras) so make sure you don't have flat batteries in your cameras (it's easy to say that it's the end of the holiday so we'll just wait till we get home to recharge the batteries).
