El Moro, Santiago de Cuba

By SMa

El Moro was built by the Spanish colonialist forces to defend the large natural harbour of Santiago in the days when it was the original captial of the island. Every day at sunset there is a ceremony to celebrate the island gaining independence from Spain by firing a cannon out to sea - the uniforms of the honour guard are those of the army that fought the war of independence. Note that the Captain on this occasion was a woman commemorating the fact that women were to the forefront in both the 19thC War of Independence and the 20thC Revolution.
