Had 7 wonderful nights stay here at this Virgin extra hotel, was superb.

Our room was a standard and had a partial sea view and a balcony with 2 chairs and a washing line. Bright and airy with quiet a/c unit it was very comfortable beds had lovely firm mattresses and soft pillows slept really well!Virgin robes for your use, an umbrella provided as we had a few rainy days and toiletry dispenser all nice touches.

You are greeted on your arrival at the hotel by efficient, friendly staff, quickly shown to the transfer bus and given chilled water, then greeted at the hotel with chilled towels and rum punch by the wonderful staff who I can't rate highly enough. From the lovely receptionists, cheeky barmen (I adored them all!) and waitresses all amazing.

The virgin rep, Suzanne is always around and very good at her job, we had no need to call on her services really as we had no problems at all.

The hotel is a 3*plus and is excellent value the food and drink is amazing, the ala carte in the chattel is healthy and well presented and if you like seafood you are in for a treat. One evening I enjoyed crab cake with endive salad with pink grapefruit dressing, mango salsa followed by seared shrimp with Thai red curry sauce and rice, followed by rum and raisin mousse, truly delicious and wine kept flowing. The buffet in Sandy's is also great so you really can't go wrong!

The location is good, very convenient for getting the reggae buses which will stop anywhere for you and at only 50p you can get from a to b in a flash (yes the drivers go fast but I love this mode of transport with the music blaring out) It was our third trip to the island so we caught up with some friends we met last year and found the buses a godsend.

The beach is nice, but there are better ones on the island with Mullins and kings beach a 5 minute stroll away, a jetty 2 minutes along the beach was ideal for my fella to enjoy a spot of fishing, ask the chef to give you some bait!

The hotel/virgin offer check in and chill out service at this hotel which means you check your cases in at the hotel and can enjoy a few more wonderful hours here and only arrive at the airport about an hour before you fly so all the queues etc are avoided, fantastic! (also there is a departure room at the hotel so you can shower and change shortly before you leave)

There are cute green monkeys living in the trees on the grounds and it is lovely feeding them fruit and watching them play. Dave, my partner had stayed at the sandridge 16 years ago so it was great to see the changes in the hotel for him.

To sum up, great value, fab staff who can't do enough for you and treat you as a house guest, they seem to love their jobs and always have a smile and nice words for you. I will go back for sure, infact I can't wait......

Your appreciation of this gem of a hotel much depends on what you expect from a holiday in Barbados. Many visitors expect that just because they are on the island that they are something special and deserve complete and utter 5* luxury and service - even if they have paid a 2* price. Also if you want 'lively' then you need to be down nearer to Bridgetown on the south coast - we picked this because it was small and further up the west coast, and didn't want lots of 'in your face' entertainment.

The hotel was an aparthotel, and when Virgin took it over they gave it a facelift and made it AI. With only 65 rooms it has a real family feel to it, and the staff in general make your holiday a joy.

I could be picky about one or two things - the beach is maybe not as good as some others, the bathrooms and living areas of the rooms maybe could still do with a little more TLC, and with Virgin in general you do get a slightly lower class of service all round if you don't actually fly on Virgin Airline (Manchester flights last year were with BMI, who were nowhere near as good as Virgin).

The atmosphere here is great, and the food is as good as you will get anywhere on the island. The buffet is teh best I have had anywhere, with loads of choice and good quality. The a la carte 'Chattel House' is also really good. You certainly shouldn't go hungry here.

All in all my wife and I had one of the nicest holidays we have had for a long time, and wouldn't hesitate to return.
