We only stayed 2 nights at the beginning of the holiday, returning after a 7 day tour to the more luxurious Leela Kovalam.
We were more than satisfied with the Uday, the location at Samudra Beach is ideal.
Breakfasts were pretty good, room was very acceptable Somehow the overall image of the hotel was slightly "grubby" but that was down to decor rather than cleanliness which was excellent.

The Uday Samudra was very good. It is kept very clean and all the staff were great, extremely friendly and helpful.
There were a few issues with sunbeds at times, they were put out with towels every morning around 8am and some people would get up early to reserve them!
The beach adjacent to the hotel isn't that good for sunbathing as the fisherman occupy it for a lot of the time, although a short walk over the hill takes you to a bigger beach. Also take a walk around the backwaters at the back of the hotel and up to the Taj Green hotel which is lovely.
The hotel rooms all have their own safes so no need to worry there. We took out travellers cheques and sterling, both are easy to change either in the hotel or in the shops outside where you tend to get a better rate of exchange. A lot of the shops will also take sterling as payment as well as credit cards.
There are two sides to the hotel, one old, one new. When we first arrived we were given a room on the old side while our actual room was being cleaned. This was OK but in need of a refresh, the new room was very comfortable. They are cleaned daily and housekeeping are very prompt at dealing with any requests you may have. All have AC which was very welcome and a fridge!
There are plenty of restaurants around near the hotel, I would recommend 3rd Rock, say hello to JJ, and Mollys both only a short stroll. Fusion at Lighthouse beach is also good, get a tuc tuc there for about 75rs each way.
There are a few shops around the vicinity of the hotel selling jewellery and various souvenir type items and a couple of shops to buy water, soft drinks and snacks. It is possible to buy alcohol from these as well but they keep it hidden from view!! If you want to buy ciggies, the hotel shop is the best bet.
On the subject of alcohol it was available in all the bars and restaurants as well as the hotel.
