Have just returned from a fabulous 2 weeks at the Travancore. The hotel is in a delightful setting on Chowara beach about 20 mins taxi ride from Kovalam. The beach is huge.
Hotel is situated at top of cliff and you take a lift down to the beach. Beautiful views. We stayed in a heritage cottage in the gardens, which are immaculately maintained by a huge team of gardeners. The room was big enough to accommodate all four of us with a huge double bed & 2 camp beds for the children. However not all rooms are as big. Traditional/antique furniture, not much wardrobe space. Be prepared for antiquated electricity supply and occasional brief power cuts. If you like high tec or cant manage without your hair straighteners this isn't for you!
Fantastic staff - can't do enough for you and just want you to have a good time. My son cut his foot badly in an accident at the pool whilst he was there, needing stitches, and the staff could not have been more concerned or helpful. (Incidentally the hospital/medical services were outstandingly good).
Lovely buffet breakfast & dinner with lots of choice.
The entertainment was limited to musical recitals each evening although we did see some Kathkali dancers one night - they were amazing.
Only thing missing - as Kerala is a dry state - was a bar to sit and relax in after dinner - everyone went to their rooms rather than socialising. Exceeding chilled out place to relax and soak up some sun.

Can't fault this hotel. A little way from Kovalam but cheap, polite tuk-tuks always available.
Not much entertainment but that suited us.
Food excellent.
We had Heritage Home (bungalow) but were moved to new Premium block - vey good. The move was partly because we were near the road & disturbed by barking dog. Also, hotel was over-booked and we were offered free backwater trip including over-night stay.

I can't believe there's no review been posted before about this amazing place.
We had done the usual Goa trips and were always taken by how nice people we meet from Kerela were, so this was a trip we had to do and we were not dissappointed.
But The Travancore Heritage will not suit everyone.
We booked a Heritage premium room. Think Indian Raj! The bed felt four foot of the ground. The length of the bathroom had one wall missing so you felt like you were outside but please don't let my disciption put you off. It looked out onto small enclosed area something a kin to a Japanese garden. And never once did we feel cold, you just felt closer to nature (sorry if that sounds corny).
The hotel in on the top of a cliff so getting down several flight of stairs to the beach might have been difficult for some but they were about to install a lift, and looking at their website they have done.
Our veranda looked out over the Indian Ocean and we passed away the evening watching flocks off birds playing in the sky before settling for the night. We had excellent weather throughout our stay but we also saw the best thunderstorm I
