San Pedro Holidays

2 out of 5 from 30 reviews
Although it's a working town, San Pedro de Alcantara is becoming increasingly popular with both holidaymakers and expats thanks to its location. The resort is just six miles west of Marbella and close to the Sierra de Ronda mountain range which is known for its natural beauty and good hiking. San Pedro is also popular thanks to its bustling old town which boasts the Paleochristian Basilica Church and the ruins of the Las Bovedas Roman baths. Newer developments lie closer to the beach while an evening stroll along the promenade is one of the best ways of checking out the many restaurants before choosing one for dinner.

The resort has some cracking villas for sale - OK if you have half a million pounds going spare ! All in all the resort was very clean, especially in Puerto Banus which you should take time out to go and see. How the other half live in their yachts !!

The resort has a very British feel to it. It should be called Costa del Dog Muck. Mucky resort with very little to offer unless you are as fit as fiddle and want to go running...to the next resort for something to do!!!

Nothing opened until after the fiestas (Spanish Holidays). We went to the market expecting bargains and found it to be like a car boot sale. If you didn't want tablecloths or four foot bronze giraffes (how do you get in your case to bring them home?) there was nothing else to buy. You will need oxygen, crampons and a base camp to get up the hill. We passed 2 mountaineers going back to get the bus.

The only bright spot was the weather, it was bright every day.

The beach didn't look very appealing and the dog owners were out in force making there own sculptures in the sand!!!

Been there done that glad We never got the T-shirt.

San pedro itself is a bit tired and not really worth visiting but there are plenty of other places near by to visit like Puerto Banus (the millionaires playground) and Marbella.

I am biased as to the location of the hotel as I adore the resort of San Pedro, although my parents in more recent years do prefer the luxury of Puerto Banus.

The entertainment may appear to be lacking but a delve in to the actual town you will see that there is lots to do and many bars and restaurants who welcome custom of tourists.

The only draw back is the road network and the "motorway" which serves as the road running through the resort. It is necessary to take caution crossing, even on the zebra crossings! At the age of 14, I was hit by a Jeep on the crossing outside the San Pedro Bus Station and had very unpleasant experiences at the local clinic, hospital and tour operator aftercare. I was lucky that the Alcotan hotel had very personal staff who looked after us and even translated at the hospital and arranged for their family doctor to attend to me when the tour operator doctor failed to turn up!

Since the accident (1996) I have returned to the resort on several occasions and found it as charming as ever.

The local "Fiesta" is held in October and is definitely worth checking with your travel operator as to the precise dates (which I believe are changeable from year to year) as the atmosphere is second to none!

This is a very quiet resort, with not much going on. We went to alternative resorts on a couple occasions - Marbella and Puerto Banus (definatly worth a visit) as the hotel entertainment was so poor and with so little to do in the resort.

San Pedro town is about 15 mins walk from hotel. Pleasant town - nothing out of the ordinary. Nice place to pass the time of day and have a coffee.
market on a wednesday(I think) was ok. bit further to walk as it is located at the top end of the town.
the beach is about 10-15 mins from the hotel and is basic- i believe they import the sand - walk along beach front to Puerto Banus for a better beach - & to see how the other half spend their money!

The resort of San Pedro is pleasant and the town itself is very Spanish. We walked one evening from the hotel to Puerto Banus and was amazed by the amount of building work but this did not affect the hotel in any way.
The beach was nice and was not packed at all. There are a few bars down by the beach which was really nice to sit in, relax and just watch the world go by.

We loved San Pedro and Marbella, and found them to be typically Spanish - not at all 'egg & chips'!! There are a few bars around the hotel, we favoured one called 'cheers' the girl that runs it is fab and knows a bit about the area too, so its worth asking her about good places to visit. Make sure you pay her a visit though, as the drinks are cheap and not the local stuff like in the hotel.

You might even bump into the First Choice reps in there, but if you do, make sure you have the stamina to keep up with them!

All in all, we'd definately go back.

We went down to the beach on one occasion. Sewage filled the sea and the beach @ 1.00pm. Never went back.
Would never go back again.
