Hi, we are cruising on the Thomson Spirit (Oct 1st) 'Pearls of the Aegean'. Money will be tight and we are looking for ways to DIY the shore trips we have selected. Any help from members who have DIY'ed these trips along with rough costs would be help.
1. Piraeus to Athens (+ Apropolis)
2. Santorini Fira
3. Agios Nickolios to Knossos

We have done several cruises and its the shore excursions that really bring in the money for the cruise lines. The problem is the amount of time the ship is in port. We have done DIY trips but time is usually against you. For instance, we found it easy to walk into town in Lanzarote (Arrecife) and rent a car for the day but in Barcelona we only just got back to the ship before it sailed because we couldn't get a cab. It helps if you know the destination well but very often the excursions are the only way to see the sights in the time available.
You can just get the metro in athens to the main sights,costs very little and surprisingly for greece it's pretty efficient and smooth running!
