I think I would go for Lassi. It's a bit livelier, close to Argostoli which has a nice square for drinks etc in the evening. My friend stayed at the Hotel Mediterannee in Lassi and said it was excellent. I think you have the option of taking your meal at lunchtime instead of the evening. They said the food was good in the evening but at lunchtime it was typically Greek (which they really enjoyed). Don't forget to visit Aghia Efimia and Sami, both are lovely resorts.

Scala definately, if you are going in busy period Lassi will be quite busy, both places offer lovely accommodation, nine muses in scala is a lovely place, tara beach is nice too but nine muses my fave, have also stayed in a budget hotel there, and that was really nice. Beaches at scala are lovely and turtle beach, has another name in greek, but ask anyone, the most fantastic peaceful beautiful beach anywhere.

Anyway thats my opinion, lovely places to eat in scala, and regular buses to rest of the island

Have to agree with Sallybear, Scala is the place to go. We stayed at the Paradise Apartments offered by Kosmar. Fairly basic 2 bed apartment, the only disadvantages was it 's location at the top of the Hill and it did'nt have a pool. However it was quiet, clean and there were plenty of pools locally. I have to say that most of the pools that we went to " charged " us for the privelege. Plenty of places to eat and the beach was fantastic for our young children. Get a car out to see the rest of the Island, Fiskardo is worth a visit, but it is a long drive ( 1.5 hours ).

If by turtle beach Sallybear means Mounda beach, it truly is a beautiful place. We didn`t visit Lassi but loved Scala, as did my grandchildren, aged 8 and 11 at the time. Can`t recommend any hotels, sorry, as we were self catering.

Skala is much more attractive than Lassi.

There are quite a number of hotels (a lot are on b&b basis) in Skala which get good reviews some of them are almost on the beach. Ther are plenty of places to eat in Skala too.

We have been to Kefalonia twice staying at the White Rocks Hotel close to Lassi but we said if we return we will stay in Skala. The White Rocks hotel is ok - very expensive and needs a little modernisation. Great views from the sea front rooms and the bungalows though.

Please can you recommend accommodation in Scala, preferably self catering but don't mind B&B, that is close to the beach? The closer to the beach the better! Also, is Scala a compact place or is it spread out? Thank you.

I would reccomend Lassi to scala, it's near to Agostli the capital where the bus station is where you can travel the Island by local transport very cheaply, it has some beautiful beaches nice hotels it has been built for tourist and does get very crowded at certain times of year, we always stay in Lixouri which suits us but many people don't like as the beaches are a good walk away or a taxi ride but it is a working town where you are involved in the Greek everyday life and also where we have many Greek friends.

Me again. Just asked my hubby if he could remember Skala. His reply ""just a beach isn't it"". Go for Lassi you won't be disappointed. OK it might be a little 'commercialised; but it's a great base. We thought Skala was a 'bit out on a limb". From Lassi you can walk to Argostoli which is absolutely great. :D

Hi Retsina, I would have no hesitation in recommending the Marina Bay Studios at Mounda Beach, about a 5 minute drive out of Scala itself. The apartments are small and fairly basic, but you can`t get much nearer to the beach than they are. You`ll find them in the Kosmar brochure. The beach is absolutely beautiful, but there are certain places that it`s not recommended you pitch umbrellas and sunbeds because it`s also known as Turtle beach. The sea is shallow for quite a good distance, so ideal for children and non-swimmers -like me!

Thank you Numberplease, Marina Bay studios sound lovely, I've just looked at the Kosmar brochure. Unfortunately, we don't drive, so even though the location on the beach sounds perfect it does seem that they are quite remote. The brochure says they are 3.5 km from Scala which sounds like a bit of a hike on foot!

We never walked into Scala, but were told it would take about a half hour, we took a taxi, but only because the apartments are at the bottom of a steep track which put me off, as I`m not ultra fit, but it was a lovely location, about 100yds from the beach.

Dear Retsina,

The hotel you need is the Tara Beach, offered on the Thomson website. There is a video on that site which gives you a good idea of where it is. Literally 30 seconds from the beach... the beach being a long stretch of sand. The swimming pool is great, our children were 9 and 11 at the time, safe and clean to use ( freshwater ).
The village is fairly compact with loads of places to eat. There is a main square where the greeks meet that has swings and slides, near the church. Sally's bar is recommended which is near the square, lots of non- alcoholic cocktails for them to try.
Scala itself is self contained, however it is fairly remote from the rest of the Island. You will need to hire a car to explore this large Island. The only other thing to warn you about is that compared to all the other Greek Islands we have been to ( with the exception of Skiathos ), it can be relatively expensive i.e. a little cheaper than England, but alot dearer than say Lesbos, Corfu, Samos and Zante.

It has to be scala for me too im afraid. Went to Kefalonia three years running from the age of fourteen to seventeen and even at that 'difficult' age i managed to have the best holidays of my life in Scala. The people are friendly and will remember you if you go back a second year even if you never spoke! Majority of accommodation in Scala is lovely but deffinately Tara Beach for location, swimming pool and everything! Hope you have a lovely time just as i did!

I've stayed at the tara beach twice and would recomend it to everybody

I love Scala, me and my boyfriend went last year and it was a lovely place and would love to go back - We are only in our twenties and found it more than lively enough. Its got plently of bars, and the resturants we went to were amazing.

There is a regular bus service or plenty of hire car shops for transport.

Anyway where ever you decide to go have a fantastic time

Has to be Scala. Depending on what you want. Scala is more Greek, Lassi more purpose built Brit holidays !! Scala also has plenty of tavernas, a few bars, nothing over the top but lots of fun. Good sand/shingle beach and watersports. Have fun. Kefalonia is brilliant.

We loved Scala- loads of restaurants etc. We stayed both times in the Paspalis [ Portland and Kosmar] virtually on beach, lovely pool and food - very very clean. I think they only do B & B
