I have book marked this page Glynis .
I recently told a friend who has had a bad ulcerated leg for a while about the benefits of applying honey and when I spoke to her last week she was pleased that it had the desired affect and her leg was vastly improved. :tup

That's excellent news Jay, I went to Aldi yesterday and bought some of their honey and cinnamon as the powdered cinnamon was only 45p a jar. Think the honey was £1.39 or similar. They had Manuka honey +10 (the best type of honey but for daily use the cheaper one is fine) for £3.99, which is an excellent price.

I am an Aldi and Lidl fan and find they have lots of products that are much cheaper than other supermarkets.

Unfortunately, yes, it is Kiltman. I just hope that people don't really believe it because some of it is just plain daft and some of it bad science but some of it is downright dangerous.

Why would it be dangerous?

Honey is a well known natural healer and I know of one person whose practice nurse recommended them take half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day. This they started to do. When they returned to the surgery for a health check up the nurse said that she didn't know what they were doing but to keep it up as their cholesterol and diabetes were both at a healthy level :que

Where to start?

Honey has does have natural anti-bacterial properties - it makes a great topical treatment for skin infections - but influenza is caused by viruses not bacteria and it won't cure you of a viral Infection. But it might be good for pimples if they are the result of infection but it would make a right mess of your pillow! And if you're stomach ulcers are cause by H Pylori bacteria, honey might help but a proper course of antibiotics will do more. But if it is the result of the overuse of Asprin or Ibuprofen it could be positively dangerous if you think eating honey and cinnamon will enable you to just keep popping the painkillers without effect. Stomach ulcers need proper treatment not honey and cinnamon.

Honey contains sugar and so diabetics need to watch their intake of honey just as they would any other source of sugar. Any diabetic who thinks that they can ignore the sugar content of honey is going to have problems with their blood sugar levels. Yes, it probably is a healthier way of sweetening of your drinks etc but you are still taking in sugar and need to take account of that.

My mum also has Type 2 diabetes and has to watch her cholesterol and her practice nurse has also said that she should keep up what she's doing because she's doing a good job of keeping both under control and at safe levels. But she doesn't take either honey or cinnamon, so perhaps it's the couple of oatcakes she has with her tea every afternoon? Or perhaps not - correlation doesn't equal a causal relationship. Or is the fact that she is very careful about her whole diet, follows her GPs instructions and never misses her medication for either condition?

And just what does, 'strengthens the heart beat' mean? The only thing that strengthens the heart is a suitable exercise regime. And increasing the amount of exercise and lowering your calorie intake are the only way of losing weight. The idea that you can eat a high calorie diet but that as long as you eat honey and cinnamon you will be OK because it won't allow the fat to accumulate in your body is downright dangerous and will make people more likely to have heart trouble rather than decrease the risk.

DNA is contained in every single cell in our bodies, not just white blood cells, and if whoever peddles this sort of stuff doesn't understand that then they understand very little! A healthy diet is what builds your immune system and the real danger of things like is is that it can lead people to believe that they can eat anything, take little exercise and yet still be healthy as long as they keep eating the 'miracle' stuff. At the least the idea that it can restore hearing is only laughable as opposed to dangerous! Loss of hearing is due to physical damage to the ear and/or damage to the aural nerve and nothing you eat will regenerate either of them and it's heartless and cruel to encourage people to think otherwise.

As with all things common sense should always prevail. :tup

The problem with the claims made by these types of ‘cures’, is that they are ambiguous and people who read them 'don’t think outside of the box'.
No alternative or complimentary medicines are intended to substitute seeing a medical practitioner and you have to use some common sense!

Honey also has antiviral properties, Raw honey contains something called Propolis, many times referred to as "bee glue." It is a complex mix of resins and phytonutrients which have numerous antiviral benefits for the body. Bees seal their hives with the stuff to protect against micro-organisms and invaders.

Manuka honey (native to New Zealand) is being used to treat a variety of symptoms, their medical grade honey is being applied to wounds and leg ulcers in the form of impregnated sterile dressings, and Manuka honey is being recommended for a variety of other ailments such as treating stomach ulcers, the herpes virus and MRSA.

Honey is not just honey, raw honey is best if you want to obtain all the nutrients and health benefits. Honey that you buy in the supermarkets may have come from various sources and mixed together and pasteurised in bulk for commercial reasons, in which case it will lose the majority of its health benefits.

You should NEVER EVER give honey from whatever source or make to a child under 12 months old, because honey can contain spores of a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which can germinate in a baby's immature digestive system and cause infant botulism, which is a rare but still a potentially fatal illness.

The use of cinnamon to reduce blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels is well documented and is no way ‘correlation doesn't equal a causal relationship’
Various trials using cinnamon have been conducted on humans with type 2 diabetes, and all the trials have been shown to reduce blood sugar levels and cholesterol. Of course there is some truth that the big pharma companies won’t do any research on a mass scale because conclusive evidence that a simple kitchen spice is just as effective as their products is something they don’t want to know about.

Nope and the statement regarding DNA and white blood cells is correct.
Mature red blood cells in the blood circulating the body do not have a nucleus and therefore contain no DNA. When blood samples are taken for DNA purposes, it is collected from the white blood cells.
Loss of hearing is due to physical damage to the ear and/or damage to the aural nerve.

I bet all those who suffer conductive hearing loss due to bacterial infections which block sounds from passing through the ear canal or middle ear to the inner ear, or loss of hearing due to sinus infections will be pleased to read that.
Again ambiguous by not stipulating the cause and using either the words permanent, temporary or reversible.

Red blood cells do start of with a nucleus and hence DNA, yes, they lose this as they mature but just like all other cells they start off with one.

Whilst “natural curatives” may have a part to play in our health once they start doing the rounds as this one then the thought that springs to mind is “Money” If you produce/market/sell some curative or other then you tell everybody how good it is never the downside.

The second thought is often “Danger” if you are on medication. I know for example that I should avoid Grapefruit which is contra-effective.

Medicine has moved on from the days of the Druids and whilst many of these things may indeed be good for you, I wonder how many people suffer problems when they take them up. Unfortunately they do not make the headlines as being bad for you or problematic such as if you drink one glass or two of red wine per day.

An example might be my youngest son who has (had) suffered from Eczema from a very young age. A long line of specialists have diagnosed this and treated him with a very wide and at times frightening variety of potions and pills. He also personally tried many of these so called natural cures. Last year he paid a hefty fee in Harley Street and finally (hopefully) found the answer and it was not Eczema, although the symptoms are the same. The answer (simply put) was an excessive amount of Histamine, which is naturally produced by the body and in many foods. Of course it also calls into question the efficacy of the treatments handed out by the medical profession.

I too have to avoid Grapefruit as I'm on medication for cholesterol. However I am taking Manuka honey daily and half a teaspoon of Cinnamon to hopefully help. :tup

All modern medicines would have derived from plant life initially and as Honey is a natural product then I'm happy with that :tup

I don't mind if my jar of honey makes someone a few pounds - bet it's cheaper than private health care :tup
