Yes!!! I hate the place and avoid it at all costs.

I felt I could have been in any resort in any country as I found it very generic. Much prefer Paphos and don't think I'll return to Protaras.

Im not on my own then.

It's changed so much since we last visited in 2000. 'Its like Blackpool with sunshine' somebody said...how very sad.

Might try Paphos next May.

Oh dear and thats exactly what I thought of Paphos...looks like I'll be giving Protaras a miss then.

We stayed there the first time we went to Cyprus - and hated it! In fact I would say it's the worst resort we've stayed in, it was that bad. Ours was a last minute holiday and we didn't know where we were going to be staying, otherwise I would have done some research and definitely gone somewhere else.

Dont get me wrong we still had a great holiday touring around the south coast and the mountains ect but Protaras was a let down. Strange you should mention Ayia Napa cos we went there on the understanding it was a dump but in all honesty we thoroughly enjoyed a few hours (mainly around the harbour) and rather enjoyed our short stay. Highlight of the holiday though was the area between Larnaca and Limosol which seemed rather unspoilt and rather beautiful in places.

Is Paphos really crap then?

I thought Ayia Napa was just as bad as Protaras! Although to be fair we didn't spend long there.
Paphos is a lot nicer than either of these, but Polis is the best - in my humble opinion!

yeah Aiya Napa has it all - it has the nice bit of nissi beach with its quieter bars, the harbour area with the nice hotels as well and then the busy nightlife if you want it - havent seen any turned they have on like they do in protaras

Nice resataurants too - best ever is Los Bandidos - my fav restaurant of all time

we have found it really quiet this year, and we have been 8 times, so we know it well. i think most resorts in the med are busy with english football etc, we love it. were can you find the beaches of cyprus anywhere else in the med. if it was too quiet people would say there would be nothing to do, and the kids wouldnt eat the local food, i have said many times if people dont like it then dont go simple as that.

i dont think protaras is over comercialized

ok there are lots of bars and resteraunts and about a dozen or so shops on the strip

but if you compare it to other main stream med resorts i thought it was quite peaceful

You now what to do then.. .just stay away and leave those who love it to have more space to boogie on down to Elvis and Kitten.

Each to their own, I say.

Where you (should) go depends on what you want from a holiday. Don't fancy telling the kids :-

"We are going to view the mountains today kids. Lovely scenery and history"

 what about a thread "who thinks historical sites are becoming too frequented"?? (totally tongue in cheek by the way)

As I say, each to their own though.

see you guys.

I'm another one who didn't really like Protaras. We made the most of it but I would not return I'm afraid. It is the only time I didn't really mind coming home. I did enjoy being on holiday but have to say we found the resort itself forgettable.
But we all can't like the same things. I would return to Cyprus as I like the island. Just as well as sister is moving there

We've stayed in Pernera 3 times previously which is just outside of Protaras, we've always found pernera to be very quiet but have enjoyed our walks into protaras to eat at the restaraunts and browse the shops , i will be very interested to see if it has become 'Blackpool with Sun' when we return on 14th,we have not been since 2001 so a lot may have changed although i hope not to be honest..

The thing is Protaras USED to be just about right with a mixture of Greek and English culture not so many years ago (that being my main point) but like some of you say each to there own.

R.I.P. The Real Protaras.....Elvis is the King.

Best leave it at that otherwise ABBA might be on the verge of a comeback as well.

hi, having been to all resorts in cyprus from as long ago as 1983, im now calling it a day,was in protaras this year, and holiday was ruined by the sort of people who dont give a toss about anybody else, hike the prices keep these ignorant yobbish drunken british people away, they just tarnish reputations,i enjoy myself as much as anyone, but enough is enough im off back to the greek islands like naxos, were i can relax without hearing foulmouthed languange every minute of the day, yes from kids also. enjoying and remembering the protaras of the early eighties, commercialism stuff it cheers

We were there for the 4th year running in September and to be honest I did not see a great deal of difference from when we first went in 2003. We love the place but as people say each to their own. As to seeing any loutish behaviour I can honestly say we never witnessed any and have not in the previous years. Maybe we have just been lucky! Anyway I hope you all have a great time wherver you decide to go.

I couldnt stay either in Protaras, there are too many drunks and English people who are hell bent on screaming and shouting all the time, the narrow streets are a nightmare, same tacky shops.

We do like Cyprus though and until last year went for years and found Pernera to be ideal, fairly low key, quieter, but we could go around the Island by car or cab.

It has got spoilt apart from the mountains, overly commerialised,to the extent its geared for the English.

I will go back sometime but a different area with a real feel of Cyprus.

We stayed in Protaras on our honeymoon in October 2005 at the Capo Bay Hotel. We loved the Fig Tree Bay beach and ventured into the main strip for food each night. It is difficult to know what it would be like in high season though, I would imagine its a bit of a nightmare in July and August.

We would happily go back there because all we look for on a holiday is a nice beach, some local shops to buy water and a paper from, and some nice restaurants. We didnt tend to stay out drinking all night.

We visited Paphos on a day trip and would consider staying around that area as well.
