Anybody out there who can give some good advice on buying property in Malaysia. Are visas difficult to obtain? can foreigners buy property legally? what sort of prices should we be looking to pay around coastal areas ie: Pennang and is pennang a good place to retire.

I haven't looked into the situation thoroughly myself but I think the government are actively encouraging foreign purchases here.
I know a couple of years ago the Malaysian Government started a programme to try and encourage retired people to settle there.
I can't remember the figures but any person wishing to participate must have a certain amount of money or annual income to qualify.
Do an Internet Search and you should be able to find the latest information.
Sorry I can't help you on the locations as the only places I've been to are Kuala Lumpur and Kuantan
