My husband & I are flying from London to Madrid on Aug 14th, hiring a car and driving to Santa Cruz de Mudela, where we are staying overnight. We are then continuing to Orgiva, near where we have hired a villa for 2 weeks.
My query is; can anyone tell me if Aug 15th is a Public holiday and if so will all shops/supermarkets be closed? I know supermarkets don't open on Sunday and if they are also closed on saturday then we will have to buy supplies (to last us till Monday) on the way from Madrid to Santa Cruz on Saturday.
15th August is, as far as I know, a National Holiday (it is here in Andalucia), so it's quite possible that all shops and banks will be closed. During the summer, the superarkets here open on Sundays, but I think this is only in tourist areas.

The major supermarkets in Benalmadena opened on a Sunday today for the first time this year.
They will be open every Sunday from now until mid/late September.
