Hello Aquamarine, I have done both three weekend breaks in Lisbon, and one two weeks holiday in Estoril next resort to Cascias. I would say you would be better staying in Cascias and going into Lisbon in the day to see the sites. You will find that there are not that many hotels in Lisbon that have pools as most of them are what they call City Hotels and do not catter for holiday makers more for business traverlers.

You can catch the train into Lisbon from Cascias right into the centre and the price a few weeks ago was 1euro 40cents one way, you can also get the same train to Balem another great site. Or get the train into Lisbon and then another one out to Sintra.

Take a look at my reports on the hotel page one is for the Sana hotel in Estoril, also in the Resort page you can get an idea of the resorts of Estoril/Cascias under Estoril this is in the Algarve Resort Page as the in no main Portugal Page, for more info about this area look at the sites below. You just have to click on the part of the map with Lisbon and go from there, if you like to see lots of sites you should look out for a trip to Fatima/Obidos/Batalha/Alcobaca and dinner in Nazare it on sale in most hotels and the price does seem a little bit on the dear side but me and the wife have always said it was the best day out we have had on holiday, 90euros with dinner 77 without but you do get to see some of the best sites in Portugal.

This is almost a repeat of a question from a few weeks ago, to save going through the detail see http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=131519

But the summary is stay in Cascais and visit Lisbon from there, dead easy! The previous thread has links for transport. For Sintra don't go by train, you have to change stations in Lisbon. It's easier to get the Scotturb bus direct from Cascais (route 403 see cubsurs message for a link) and worth breaking your journey for an hour at Cabo da Roca.

The direct bus from Lisbon airport to Cascais doesn't seem to run anymore but it's simple enough to get the Carris Aerobus 91 to Cais do Sodre station and then get the train.

Steve 8482 above is correct about the Airport - Cascais bus. It was withdrawn a year ago.
