Yup, Vegas especially is like this, even though I got a rate around 35% less than MGM originally wanted for the Signature, I kept checking the rates and within a week of me flying, the management company dropped the rates again so I cancelled my original booking and rebooked on the new one saving another $500.
You simply MUST keep an eye on prices if you're going to Vegas and you've booked your hotel seperately, it's almost inevitable that prices will drop unless it's a 'holiday' period in the States or there's a big convention or sporting event in town

Going Christmas and part of our stay is four nights at the Golden Nuggett, I have been watching the prices and they dropped last week so I gave them a quick call and they changed my booking to the new lower prices, no problem at all, didn't even have to cancel and rebook. Keeping my eye on other booking see if same happens.

Yep it's a nice little Vegas quirk with hotel bookings and I concur with the advice to keep on looking right upto your departure dates. Another thing is to ring up Casino Marketing of the hotel you are staying at to see if your previous game play affords a reduced room rate. I did this for a Friday on our last trip and managed to get a room in the MGM down from $189 to $109. Well worth the phone call, and at the same time, also worth asking for special requests such as strip view etc.

Ive just booked a flight for next may to vegas and am also going to be booking my own hotel, i was thinking of booking way in advance but is that wise? Its difficult to know what prices the hotels are actually going to be months in advance, you could leave it to the last minute and get stung, how much in advance would people recommend to book a hotel?

If you cannot be fairly sure that you are going during a quiet time (ie between Thanksgiving and Christmas), you are best booking early - but make sure that you book direct with the hotel and don't book a non-refundable deal. Monitor offers on INVALID URL and you can cancel and rebook if you see a better price. If a big convention, or sports event gets booked in and the prices shoot up, you at least have something booked at a reasonable price.

If you book directly with the hotel then you can usually cancel without penalty and you will receive a refund of your deposit (first night's stay + tax).

If you are interested in Harrah's properties try http://www.harrahs.com and click on 'hot deals'. You may even get a good price now for next may!
