Hi Sunworshiper,
Sorry I can't recommend an hotel from personal experience in the Playa Dorada area but I stayed in a nice one in Bahia Maimon. We want a change this year and are going South-East to Dreams La Romana.

Have you looked at the reviews here for Playa Dorada hotels?

Hi Sunworshipper,

My wife and I stayed at the Paradise Beach Club over 10 years ago and had a great time there. I've read somewhere, (on here I think), that it's very recently been refurbished, so I would imagine it is looking great.

It's on an excellent beach, has three restaurants, has it's own casino, own disco, and has nightly entertainment.

The three restaurants, when we were there, were varied. There was the buffet style restaurant, which did not require pre-booking, and which varied the theme of the food each night, (Indian, Chinese, Spanish, Dominican, Thai & etc.). The breakfast was also served in there and had an excellent choice.

The other two restaurants were an Italian, (below the Casino and beside the pool), plus a Grill Bar, adjacent to the beach. Both of these had to be booked in advance, but that was never a problem if you booked them at breakfast time a day in advance.

The staff were excellent and very friendly. They worked hard and I tipped them well because of that, (even though we are not really supposed to in an All-Inclusive deal), as opposed to what I found in Jamaica, where it was difficult to get served at bars unless I tipped.

The whole Playa Dorada complex was very secure, though I found there wasn't much to do in the centre. However, I now believe that Paradise Beach Club have a sharing deal with another complex within the resort, so you have the choice of using their facilities just to make a change.

Entertainment varied from night to night and was generally fine, for a holiday resort.

Hope you find this useful.

Don't forget that August is Hurricane season. My knowledge of DR geography is rubbish, but is Playa Dorada, North? Did a bit of research on the weather as we wondered whether to chance it and the North is supposed to be safer. However it's also rainy season, although hot rain I guess!! Even the travel agent advised against it, although I know lots of people go in the summer and it is fine. Just thought it was worth letting you know incase you didn't realise, I know it's a small risk, but just worth considering. Have to say I was very tempted as August prices are no more than for the eurozone

Daughter, son-in-law and their 2 teenagers went to Iberostar Costa Dorado in September and said it was fabulous.

We stayed in the North in August a few years ago and although we caught the very tail end of Hurricane Charlie it in no way spoilt our holiday or put us off going at that time of year again. In fact we're going back to Dom Rep this August. We only had an hour or so of very strong winds and a couple of hours of torrential (yes, warm) rain. The rest of the time it was hot, sunny and beautiful.

We stayed at the Iberostar Costa Dorada for 3 weeks in Aug 2006, fabulous hotel with great staff and great food. Only 1 main bar at night though and thats the auditorium plus route 66 disco venue. Probably gets the best write ups of all hotels in that area.

We always book into the Iberostar Costa Dorada. Have chosen this hotel for the last 5 years and will be going back for April/May this year again.
Staff are wonderful and very helpful and cant do enough for you to make your stay just perfect, resort clean and tidy, food is brilliant and that comes from my husband who is a fussy eater.

About the weather in August here is a great link to use its month by month history over as many years as you wish to go back over.

Hope this helps,
