Coral reefs surround the island. However, the southern (caribbean) coast has the more pristine reefs due to the calmer waters. The reefs on the northern coast get battered by the atlantic. Have a look at this video I filmed while diving off Juan Doilo in the south. Catalina is quite spectacular, video here.

The reefs tend to be in deeper water rather than inshore so snorkelling can be limited, depending on your location. Why not take the next step and try strapping on some scuba gear? You'll not look back.
