Electrical sockets in the Caribbean / Dominican Republic

Hi there.
I know that the sockets in the DR are (supposedly) the same as the USA and the voltage is 110v but what I need to know is there an extra round hole in the socket? The reason that I ask is that I've just recently purchased a "step up" voltage coverter and it has 3 pins. Two flat ones and a thin round one.This item is boxed and labelled for use in North America.So are the sockets in the DR slightly different or will this fit OK?

If I recall correctly I didnt notice seeing a round pin, but then again, the plug we had just had the two thin strips on it with no third pin so I wouldnt have paid much attention to it. I remember the two pins in particular because the plug kept falling out of one of the sockets so I had to bend the pins a bit. Can you remove the third pin? I.e. take the plug apart and remove it, or if plastic then just snap it off should you find the plug sockets dont have a third pin?
