My wife and I flew into Gerona Airport, with RYANAIR, recently. We had pre booked a hire car from HERTZ.
The person in HERTZ told us to examine the car carefully for scratches etc.
It took a while to find the car, a man working for HERTZ showed us how to find it.
The car was covered in dust, very hard to see anything, never mind scratches.
I walked around the side of the car, a man at the front told me my shoe lace was open. I fastened it. My wife remained at the back talking to this man about all the dust. She thought he worked for HERTZ.
In less than 2 minutes the men were gone and also missing were 2 small bags. Lap top, camera, 2 passports, the key of the house we were to stay in etc.etc.etc.
No one in the car park saw anything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The park for hired cars had no gates, fence or CCTV cameras. Wide open for every con man!!!!!!!

This is a sorry tale and one that is quite common place in Spain. All should be extremely careful - Car Hire companies of reputable standing should in general no different to UK based companies - and if you have any doubt insist that the desk clerk calls and provides you with escort to vehicle - either through company van or individual who picks you up at the desk. Further, thiefs do know what cars are rented - you should always make sure that you leave nothing in view - and never stop when driving if someone is flashing you etc until you consider it safe to do so - motorway service station etc...or where there are a lot of people around. Never ever let anyone out of your sight. I hear many stories (I am based in Malaga/Gibraltar )- and tourists are easy prey. Safe driving.
