This may be a bit irrelevant but i was in Germany in march with a friend and when she went to top up her phone using the same network provider top up card the money would not register onto her phone and she lost 20 euros. Just beware that top up cards may not work on phones abroad even if the network provider is the same.

while in turkey the other year we purchased a turkish sim card which was very cheap to use, i was wondering if anyone knows of anything similar in tunisia

Sorry but why did you pay 20 dinnars for a Tunisian SIM card? Unless your friend makes a living out of this and you just wanted to help him out?They are much cheaper than that
There are 2 networs Tunisiana and Tunisian Telecomms. I bought Tunisiana while in kerkennah last year as someone told me that you can not smsm UK from Tunisian Telecomm network. Later on turned out they are both as good (or as bad LOL - often losing reception...) and do the job - rather than using UK sim - get your handset unlocked and put a Tunisian sim in while on holiday.

Top up cards can be bought almost anywhere and you can top up from 5 dinnars up.

Hi yes you can buy a sim card for 10 tds- five pounds to last when u are in Tunisia,you have to sign a contract and show your passport for ID also you can pay something like 10 pounds to have them chipped on internet i think and then you just add credit 5tds lasts ages out there. I used my for two weeks and made calls local and to England and it was value for money.

Hi i didnt pay 20 dinars for the sim card Amir gave it to me as a present as it was costing me and my niece a fortune using our 02 and vodaphone mobiles. I was so glad some1 took the time to tell me about these and show me how to use them.

Amir and i have chatted since and i suggested to him it may be helpful to the tourist and save them a fortune if they could easily get hold of a sim card.

I visited there 5 times last year and 3 this year up to now but ive never seen SIM CARDS for sale only the top ups MAYBE YOU ANNA can help all the tourists on here and tell them where they can buy for 10 dinars. if not
if they are still interested and dont mind Amir making about #2.00 profit after he has used his petrol to go buy 1 and then delivered it to your hotel for you Id call that a typical freindly Tunisian person. AND then show you how to use it and change it to ENGLISH cos as much as ive tried to learn arabic ive not grasped it yet.

Most town centres will have small shops which will sell, phones, sims etc. I too have had Tunisiana sim which cost 10TD. Just ask hotel staff for their whereabouts. Or you could try

taking my moby is it a good reception etc there?

UK code is always 0044.

Reception can be bad in some places - on my last holidya the only spot was under a particular palm tree
Calling UK from there as above :0044

Just remember to drop the zero from the area code or mobile number after dialling 0044.

For example - if the landline is: 0208 123 4567 you will dial

00 44 208 123 4567 (you do not dial the zero at the front of the area code)

If the mobile is: 07767 123 456 you will dial

00 44 7767 123 456 (again, drop the first zero from the mobile number)

If you planning to use the phone a lot - get it unlocked before leaving for holiday and ger a Tunisian sim card when you get there - muchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh cheaper.

Be careful with roaming!!! I know with Vodaphone (in Ireland) they are notorious for ripping people off. I know one girl in Spain who sent 9 messages and she lost €20 credit. You know why? Because they charge for delivery reports and also if you recieve a message. And sometimes they deduct from your credit for no reason at all!!
It was the same for me in France but I just ended buying a French SIM card for thirty euro but it was a better investment. I don t know what the rates in Tunisia for roaming but I don t think its worth the risk. I am going to e mail if possible or I would suggest you buy a sim card it works out cheaper. Maybe its changed now or different for Britain but Vodaphone got into alot of trouble with the EU commission for its practices in Ireland.

There are even Tunisian sim cards on Ebay now! It looks like calls to England cost 16p a minute and no charge to receive calls.

Just got back from Tunisia yesterday - miss it already
Again, got myself a Tunisiana sim card while in there, 5 or 10 dinar for a card (bought some credit with t of course) - the one I had from last year did not work after not being charged for a year so got a new one.

Had a great time, texting/calling to UK from Tunisia on Tunisian sim card costs next to nothing.

Do NOT use your UK phones as you may get a shock on the bill on arrival back to UK.

I am taking a spare unlocked mobile out there with me and will get a Tunisian SIM. What is the situation regarding them not working if you don't use them for a while? I usually go out there twice a year. Someone told me that if you leave some credit on your card when you come home it will be OK when you get back. Another question, how do you know your number? I would presumably have to text anyone likely to call me to let them know, though as I shall also have my normal phone people will still be able to reach me in an emergency.

I've always used my Vodaphone mobile though not very much, but I certainly learnt a lesson in May. I lost my mobile and tried ringing it from a friend's phone to track it down. As it was still ringing and had my answering message on I knew it hadn't been stolen as the SIM hadn't been taken out. Couldn't ring Vodaphone as didn't have the number. When I got back it was still ringing so I rang Vodaphone and they cancelled it. When my bill came in there were several calls listed, all to the same number, after I had lost it. On checking, Vodaphone told me that was for the calls to my messaging service when I was trying to ring it, plus their messages to me to say I had 'missed calls'
