Have been to both countries.
Planing on going in June for 1 week.
Last time went to Bulgaria in Sept 2005 for 2 weeks and it rained for about 9 days on and off. Very cheap holiday stayed at the Fenix in Sunny Beach.
Stayed in Portugal about 14 years ago with parents, nice weather, good food and didn't have to pay.
What are the advantages of Bulgaria?

Very much depends where you are going to in both countries and what kinda holiday it is going to be. I have been to both and I would say that if you want a couply holiday with still alot to do in the evening i would say Algarve Portugal. If you are going on a mates holiday or even a holiday with another/few couples then Sunny Beach Bulgaria.
The main draw to Bulgaria is the cheapness of everything. However it is still a way away from being as establihed as the Algarve as a holiday resort.

How did you find Bulgaria, Anna, apart from cost how does it compare with the Algarve, please.
Were you disappointed?

Hi Peter
I enjoyed Bulgaria and might go back next June if I can afford it! That depends on how much the costs of running a house and paying a mortgage as I am in the process of buying my first house.
I think if you go you need to go in either June, July or August to Bulgaria.
Sunny beach is nice but very commercialised. My partner and I found that restaurants away from the centre such as the Condor were alot cheaper and nicer. The only thing I did miss is vegatables you don't get many! The beer is 50p a pint and there is happy hours if you like cocktails and spirits.
The beach and the sea is lovely. I would recommend going on the trip to the blue mountains as you get to see what life is like in Bulgaria and the air lift down the mountains lasts about 20 mins and the views are lovely.
I also brought back a dozen crystal glasses as you visit a crystal factory on the blue mountains trip.
I think Bulgaria is as good as Portugal!

Thanks Anna, why not have a look at the Varna area next time, Golden Sands or St Konstantin perhaps?
Golden Sands is less commercialised than Sunny Beach, and Varna is a beautiful city.

Hi Peter
Yes I would consider Golden Sands next year but not sure about Varna as I went on day trip the first time I went to Bulgaria and found it abit boring. I am abit of a beach person.
