Feargal, I know the place your on about but can't remember the name of it.
I'll be in Protaras mid june myself and I know it will be very hot. Last year I went last week of June, first week of July and it was over 100 degrees for quite a bit of the time.
I guess you will be talking mid 90's when we are there.
Fergal, try these two:

Hi,
Off to Paphos in May. Want to do a day trip (coach) to the North, particularly intersted in seeing Kyrenia. Has anybody done one they can recommend. There is a bit of info about a Louis day trip on their website, but I'm guessing there will be some chocie when we get there. Also, what do you do for currency in the north ? Is it Turkish Lira and do you bring some from the UK ?
Thanks for any help.
Martin.

Martin, I did the same trip last year. I cant remember what currency we used - but dont remember changing any.
We visited Kyrenia and Bellapais Monastery. Stunning views.
Have done it now but probably wont go over again. I prefer the South.

Hi - I did the same trip as Kath in October. I think we actually went on tihs occasion with the tour opp on the coach and it was very informative. We didn't change any money and were able to use Cypriot currency - not that we bought very much. Wasn't overly impresed by Kyrenia - I though it would be more picturesque. Loved Bellapais monastery and had a fantastic meal in the restaurant nearby - Tree of Idleness I think.
I enjoyed the day out - views were amazing, but it was a one off for me - I prefer the South of the island, but was glad I went.

Stayed in the North last year and they will take pounds, Cy pound or T Lira. Got to admit Kyrenia harbour is picturesque (is that spelt right?!!) but think the South beats the North hands down. The North isn't even as cheap as people think and it isn't especially unspoilt as there is building work going on everywhere and generally they don't seem to have any sanitary concerns as they chuck rubbish everywhere even on the turtle beaches
Kilgoreck,what a load of nonsense.
I live in the North and my wife and myself set ourselves a budget of £100 a week to live on,we never manage to spend it though.
English fags a pound a packet, brandy, vodka, gin £2 a bottle,go to the Girne market on a wednesday and you can fill your car up full of veg, fruit and fish and still get change out of a tenner
As for the building work,if you go 20 kms either side of Girne then there is very little building work going on.
As for the rubbish on Turtle beach the vast majority of it is washed up by the sea, thrown overboard by greek sailors no doubt
And best of all we dont have timeshare touts

Thanks for the tips eveybody.
Think it would take a lot to get me to stay anywhere other than Paphos but I am looking forward to seeing Kyrenia.
Not long to wait now....

Gooligan I'm just going by what I experienced. When you live somewhere you always know where to go to get cheap goods, food etc but as a tourist you don't . What I was getting at is a lot of people seems to have this idea that the North is dirt cheap ala how Turkey was a couple of years ago and that just isn't the case. As for the rubbish everyone was remarking on how rubbish seems to be just chucked everywhere. Also thought the service even in a five star hotel (woould have been 3 * by the South's standards) left a lot to be desired eg EVERY single time we ate there they would forget to bring something !
To be honest the best place would be a combination of the North and the South!
Out of interest what do you do jobwise there or are you retired at 35?

Yes I'm retired, had to break my back though to get my pension
If you ever come back dont go full board, get out and about, eat where the locals eat.
Have a read of TonyAdams post in the north Cyprus section.

Theres a really nice one that goes from outside the Sunrise hotel, its a large white boat with CocaCola written on the side, you just go around the bay and then they stop in a little cove and you can dive of,the water is so clear. The only thing I would say is make sure you take your own refreshments they are really expensive on board.
Why don't you go on the VIP latchi day trip. It leaves at 10am and gets back at 8pm. Best day out ever. Open bar, lunch and dinner served...V.Good. - Just go down the harbour to the catamaran and ask for Sergis the manager and he'll book you on. Well worth the money
any ideas?
Just got back from Pafos - we did a half day boat trip on the Wave Dancer 1 and had a fab time. This is more than just a boat - it is superb, with a nice deck area with sunbeds, bar, lounge and plenty of areas to relax. The wave dancers even put on a show with various themed dances and quizzes it was very entertaining. The best thing about it was that they didn't cram you on like sardines - there was plenty of space and it was very relaxing. The bar and food prices were reasonable too. We stopped at Coral Bay to swim, the water was very cold but enjoyable! The trip was 12 - 3pm, but you were able to get on board from 10:30, which we did and had a really nice time.
The trip cost £12 and we booked it directly at the harbour.
Have a great time!

Hi all
We were last in Protaras about six years ago, and I believe it has changed quite a bit, we are going back to the Alva, this will be our third time in the Alva, and we are really looking forward to it. Do they still do the boat trip from fig tree bay, going aroung by Famagusta. We paid about £5.00 anybody know how much it is now??

Thanks

Hi,We went on a fab boat trip last year, its a large white boat with Coca Cola written down the side,it leaves from outside the sunrise hotel, there is one that leaves from near the Capo Bay hotel, but I think the Coca Cola one is better.although be warned take your own refreshments as they are really expensive on board, think it cost us £7.50.
