Why do they dim the lights on take off and landing?

This facinates me, why do they dim the cabin lights as a safety feature for take off and landing? How is it a safety feature? Thanks for any answers

I thought it was something to do with your eyes being adjusted to the darkness if something goes wrong with the plane.
