THE RESORT.
PLAYA DE MURO

BEACH - In our opinion, the beach in this particular part of Alcudia is the best in the whole resort. It consists of fine, white power like sand and is very clean. The sea shelves very gently and is therefore ideal for children. There are lifeguards on duty at all times during the day. We found there was a problem with Jelly Fish again this year (as we did last year). We had one day of rain which seemed to churn the sea up and bring the little buggers in to shore. The trouble is they are a greeny brown colour so you can't see them amongst the churned up seaweed and there were hundreds of them. My husband was stung twice in a matter of seconds which he said felt like a wasp sting. Nothing too serious but you can imagine the little ones would be worse off if they were stung. We noticed quite a few people at the lifeguard tower receiving treatment, even one of the local police who came into shore on a jetski, but they didn't warn people not to go in the water.

PUBS/RESTAURNATS - Playa de Muro has a fair amount of shops, restaurants, pubs etc. There's a Burger King for the fast food lovers but also traditional Spannish restaurants serving Tapas and Paella. Prices are reasonable.

We particularly love the Las Delicias Restaurant - the food is fantastic. We couldn't belive the size of the T-Bone Steak's, they were as big as the plate and only cost 16 Euros.

Another of our favourites is the Smiths bar/restaurant. The staff are so warm and welcoming (they can't do enough for you) and the food is great. They do a fantastic Sunday Roast (if you miss a little taste of home) and the half a chicken is lovely. They also do a quiz and bingo every night (not bad actually one night the prize money was 75 Euros). We ended up eating there most nights of our second week due to the rubbish food at our hotel. Really good value for money as well.

GENERAL ENTERTAINMENT - There is a Cheers family fun pub which is good fun if you like that kind of thing. We went in a few times but to be honest it wasn't as good as previous years. They don't seem to do the kids party games like like they used to, before the kids could win prizes. They only seemed to play one game "go fetch" which basically consisted of the kids having to run into the crowd fetch items (usually Dads trousers or Mum's bra - classy - not!). They still got parents to dress up as characters like Shrek and Fred Flintstone and dance with the kids to "The Music Man", "King Caractacus" (think that's how it's spelt) but again it wasn't as good as previous years.

Pony Land is still there. It costs 4 Euros for about 10 minutes and is great fun for the little ones. We became such regulars (as in previous years) our son got free rides. Next to that is a giant inflatable slide/climbing frame. Again for 4 Euros your kids can stay on for as long as they liked.

There is also an English pub called The Swan. They do a quiz in the evening (although we never went in at night), but it did seem very popular. We only went in the day time, the Jacket Potato with Chilli is fab.

There is a giant maze down the road which is advertised as "great fun". We had a look as we have in previous years but again didn't fancy getting lost for an hour in 30+ degrees of heat. Each to their own as they say.

Just across the road from the Maze is the Oasis Restaurant. At the back there is a crazy golf course, which we end up playing on every year at least half a dozen times. There are pool tables, an inflatable climbing activity thing, trampolines and a mini go-kart track. It's ideal for killing an hour or two. There are tables to sit and have a beer at but we found the prices a little expensive in comparison to other pubs in the resort.

The area in general, in our opinion, is ideal if you like a nice family holiday and peace and quiet when you go to bed. We haven't seen one lager lout on any of our visits but that's probably due to the clientelle mostly consisting of families. I would suggest Playa de Muro is not really ideal for the 18-30's set unless they prefer not to go clubbing etc. The area has a noise exclusion zone which means that after midnight all pubs etc must contain the music etc behind sound proofed doors. In general there is enough for us to do for two weeks.

ALCUDIA

The walk from Playa de Muro to the main resort of Alcudia takes approximately 30-40 minutes (at a leisurely stroll) either down the beach, along the road or round the large salt water lake. You can travel by bus for about 1 Euro but beware, after about 7pm the buses are packed so solid you can barely breathe - no exaggeration!

The main resort is, well, Blackpool in the sun. British Pubs, Shops (selling tourist tat) amusement Arcades, Burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut etc. There are one or two really good restaurants in this area though and it's ok for a night out entertaining the kids. We have never stayed in this part of Alcudia but it looks like a lot of the hotels are either right over or right next to music bars/restaurants so would probably be quite noisy.

The Waterpark is just down the road from Alcudia and, although we've never been ourselves, friends have told us this is very good for a day out.

There is also a very good Go-Karting track. The cost is 15 Euro for an adult car and 10 Euro for a kids car. You get about 10 minutes which in our opinion isn't bad value for money.

PUERTO DE ALCUDIA

Approximately a further kilometer from Alcudia. In our opinion Puerto is lovely, really picturesque and in some parts rather cosmopolitan. This is the place to buy "genuine" designer gear.

The harbour nice and you can wander around looking at the yachts moored there, there are also a few restaurants in the marina area but for us they were a little on the expensive side. There is also a small funfair in the marina area for the little ones and market stalls selling everything from Candy Floss to Belts. The last bus back to Alcudia/Playa de Muro from Puerto Alcudia leaves at about 10pm and there is always a massive queue at this time again resulting in over crowded, dangerously loaded buses. There is a large Taxi rank but after 10pm the queue is huge, you can wait for up to an hour. Prices for taxis back to Playa De Muro range between 6-8 Euros.

ALCUDIA MARKET

This runs in the old town of Alcudia, about 2 miles inland, every Sunday and Thursday. Again the buses are a nightmare, worse than usual on these two days. A taxi ride to the market will cost about 10 Euros but the old town is definately worth a visit.

The market sells everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, leather goods, handbags, sunglasses to the usual fake designer stuff. We always go and noticed that this year they have opened up parts of the old castle ramparts so you can walk around the old city walls. The views are spectacular. Be careful though, the drops are quite frightening and they aren't always roped off.

All in all we think Alcudia is great for families with young children - enjoy!

The resort itself, no complaints. We have visited many times before. It is clean and there are plenty of things to do. The beach is lovely, crystal clear seas, white sand, watersports and boat trips. Bus service into Alcudia and Puerto Pollensa.

The beach was great, shallow water for at least 100 yeards out to sea which I would add was a lot wormer than our pool.
Usual sea-side type of shops selling tacky gifts etc. but plenty of supermarkets so if you are considering self catering you have plenty of choice and the restaurants seems plentiful and reasonabley priced.

The beach at Playa De Muro is outstanding. Soft clean sand, clear water that stays shallow for a good distance (ideal for younger kids).

There were no huge discos in the resort itself (a few up towards Alcudia), but plenty of good restaurants and bars with entertainment - the Posh Paddy and Cheers were our usual haunt.

The walk from the hotel took you across the river a couple of times, and it was nice to throw bread to feed the hordes of fish swimming by. Our youngest also enjoyed the pony rides by the bridge, and got a voucher for a drink at Cheers with each ride. Plenty of playparks around as well.

All in all, an ideal resort for a family hoilday - felt very safe and clean.

The hotel location is only a 10 minute walk if you fancy a change and visiting a local bar of an evening (The Posh Paddy has a great atmosphere and live music).

The hotel bus will take you to the beautiful sandy beach where the warm shallow waters makes it an ideal place for anyone with children.
