Isla Canela Holidays

4 out of 5 from 25 reviews
The island of Isla Canela is joined to the main land via a bridge and remains a popular holiday destination with the Spanish and Portuguese markets. The Andalusian town is blessed with a beach more than four and a half miles long as well as sand dunes and salt marshes where wildlife abounds. Accommodation is largely upmarket with both hotels and apartment complexes available to stay in. The island offers all manner of activities, including sailing, canoeing, tennis, fishing and diving while the local marina is a good place to have a coffee and watch both the world and the boats go by.

We found the resort and the beach very clean and the walk around the harbour / marina quiet but very pleasant. It is quite flat ground and has easy access to the beach. There are a few bars, a couple of supermarkets and a gift shop. Just right if you want a stress free holiday. For more shops Ayommonte town is about a 5 / 10 minute drive away and they have a market there on a Saturday selling mainly clothes, bags, shoes and jewelry. There is also a regular ferry service for about 1 euro 20 cents which will take you over to Portugal were there are a few more small shops. You may need to take your passport though as when we went the police were doing spot checks and turning people without them back. We are hoping to go back for a week in September with my mum.

Isla Canela is a very quite resort ideal for couples looking for a relaxing break. The beach is an expansive stretch of fine sand and never gets busy. The low key night life centres around the marina and consists of a handful of bars and reataurants. It is quite easy to travel into the larger town of Ayamonte and from there it is a ten minuite ferry crossing to Portugal and the start of the Algarve.

Nothing wrong with the area or the beach, simply so under developed that there was nowhere to go, nowhere to 'shop', and nothing to do outside of this relatively isolated hotel.

The resort is very quiet only a couple of bars and restaurants. Not for those who are wanting nightclubs and a wild time !
The resort is having major building work projects taking place, in 5 years time the place will be unrecognisable.

Resort is clean, only mess is made from the building work.

Miles of sandy beach. The beach is very clean & is practically deserted during the week. However, it becomes very busy on weekends.
Not much to do in the resort - a very relaxing, quiet resort. Don't go there if you are looking for nightclubs.

The resort although a developing area was kept clean. We felt that attention had been made to keeping the hotels and the residental apartments low rise rather than building obtrusive large high rise appartments which we feel would rather spoil the resort and take away its natural beauty. Because the Riu Atlantico was situated on and at the end of the beach we had suberb views of both the beach and the harbour. The white sandy beach stretched forever and was great to stroll along after breakfast. It was cleaned daily and was about two minutes from the hotel and easily accesable along a flat wooden walkway through small sand hills and shrubs. There are a few bars in the resort if you wanted a change from the hotel and a couple of beach bars. You can also book sea and fishing trips from the harbour and the golf course is just down the road. Very quiet but great for getting away from stress and recharging the body batteries. We really enjoyed my stay here and cant wait to go back.

Isla Canela is fabulous, yes it’s not the typical Spanish costas, but without sounding snobbish, who really wants them!

It's friendly people are great, whether they be ex pats or locals, we certainly made friends with some lovely people.

The other half of Isla Canela is not as nice, yet, but it looks as though there is development going on to upgrade the shops and restaurants to the newer standard of the marina shops and bars.

The close proximity to Ayamonte, Portugal, Seville and Huelva, make this a superb destination to relax or sightsee.

We went with Thomson this year and they were great, but will feel confident in travelling to this area under our own steam.

There are lovely apartments in either the marina area or beach facing which are often up for rent.

If you were self catering you can use the Rui for a meal or use the restaurants around the marina, the Chinese in canela, or the great fish restaunts in Ayamonte. El Chocco, Pizza and pasta, El Barbaria.

Have a great time but don’t tell everyone or else it will get spoilt!!

A quiet place to relax walk along the beach that goes for miles. Watch out for the dead jellyfish though. I do not know if you can still get a sting off them when they are dead. Portugal is only a cheap boat ride away and worth the trip.
