If you are can someone talk me through it please ..I have tried but all im getting is a link to the image what I want is for the image to be on the post ...

OK, on the picture you want to post you will see image links on the right of the screen, click on IMG Code it will say copied, then just paste the link in to your post and the picture should appear like this below

The code you pick should start and finish with an ![tag like this.. <br />

But if the image is too big, it won't work (with the img tags ) - the HT software throws out a message saying the dimensions cannot be determined.

That is reasonable, since a massive image would stretch the page and make it uncomfortable to read. If you must link to a large image, then use the direct link, without the img tags and it will open the image in a new tab., outside of the forum structure.
