Yes to LV and very probably yes to NY. They don't have chip and pin there so you sign for everything and will probably be asked for photo ID when you use the card. I have a photocopy of my passport and that has been accepted everywhere.

Be aware that in LV and possibly in NY, the ATM's charge a fee even if Nationwide don't. In Vegas it is usually $4.00-4.99, but the ATM inside Casino Royale only charges $1.00.

You can also use it buy buy things in say Walgreens or CVS and they will offer you cashback which is a free way of getting cash.

Luci - what about dollar TC's ?

In NYC you can use nationwide, i used mine, but no to chip and pin, just sign your sig. Didnt have to use ID either. just make sure you tell your bank and credit card you are going, if you dont they can easily stop your dd card or cc card, they did my brother, and it was highlighted on watchdog as well. Take more than one card for your own security :tup Tc's are fine as well.

Some people say you are better with your N/W card and just withdrawing cash as you go.

I tend to keep an eye on rates via an email from http://www.xe.com and watch what http://www.crowncurrencyexchange.co.uk are offering. If I see a good rate then I order $ TC's for forward purchase, ie you pay for them when you order and the rate is fixed. They post them out on an agreed date.

I ordered for our November trip at $2/£1. However the rate rose come November so I didn't use the TC's and withdrew cash instead. We got up to $2.08 with N/W. I have used the TC's this trip as the Interbank rate is $1.97. OK so I will have lost out on a bit of interest, but with the interest rates at the moment it won't be much.

You can use $ TC's like cash in the US. Buy something for $50, pay using a $100 TC and you get $50 change in cash. Some places as for photo ID and some don't.

We used our Nationwide card extensively in NY last year in shops, restaurants, diners, supermarkets and the ATMs. The American banks did charge a nominal amount to withdraw cash.

Used my Nationwide card in quite a few ATM's in Orlando, the parks seemed to charge the most around $2 75 others $1 75 the exception was City bank there was no mention of a charge, you can find them in the 7 11 shops, easy to use touch screen, put your card in and out right away, enter your pin and choose checking found this out about half way through our Holiday, could have saved enough to buy a tank of petrol twice over.

Not sure why you can't use your ATM card here, I use mine all the time- no signature required- just enter your PIN number.. rather than using ATM for cash withdrawals and incurring a fee if it is an out-of-network bank, just click on 'Cashback' when making a purchase- you can get up to $100 most shops and some places a lot more. I also use it when traveling, never had a problem anywhere in Europe I just enter my PIN ..

emdia,
We are talking the USA were banks charge a fee to withdraw cash, our Nationwide card is used only for our Holl's its a Debit card and we use it any were in the world we get a better rate and don't incur a charge to with draw cash abroad like most other banks, plus I cant see the point of going to a buy something I probably don't want just to get cash back. and I seem to recall that not so long ago there was a bit of a hue and cry about our UK banks trying to make a charge if you used another banks ATM that's why most of them now inform you that you not be charged for your with drawl.

Yes, I am in the USA- I realise you want to use your debit cards with chip and pin security, that is what is used here.

Yes I know we can use them there, that's what confused me a bit when you said that you wasn't sure why we couldn't use our ATM cards over there because we can and do and we tend to post any tips that we find useful to others that might not know about ATM's like City bank that don't charge and I'm sure that every one would be grateful if you could point out other banks that don't charge a with-drawl fee.
Other tips that you might be able to give are things like the local flea market about ten miles east of Kissimmee on the 192 were you can get 2 decent leather belts for $3 instead of $7 each and Air trainers for $12 instead of $25 to $30 in the so called cheap advertised flea markets in the built up areas, I'm sure that there are other places like this that we tourists don't know about.

I don't mean to confuse but if you look at the original question by OAP re using chip and pin technology and the Moderator's response which suggests it is not available in New York.... that's where I'm wondering what the problem is since chip and pin is everywhere here- as far as I know....

I apologise if my information wasn't 100% correct and I am always happy to be corrected. However I was posting my experience of many visits to the US, mostly to Las Vegas and Orlando, and I have never been asked to use chip and pin. Obviously this experience is limited to the places I have visited and may be different in the rest of the US.

Sorry didn't realise the you were replying to oap who posted nearly 2 months a go and as your post was only 17 minutes after mine I naturally thought it was a reply to mine silly me.
