do you mean Platanos?
I kept away from Crete for 20 odd years for the same reasons that you have put. We've been twice now.
1st to Georgopolis (which we found a little less charm than we expected) twinned with Paleochora which we found wonderful.
This year we stayed in Myrtos on the south east which was by far the most "Greek" place we've stayed in ages and just what we were looking for.
If it is Platanos then that end of the island is great with warm, friendly people and not too busy.
