Dear Becki
We got a big cockroach trying to get into our apartment last August in Stoupa! Haven't seen any more though. :D

Ah Stoupa - one of the places I will definitely go back to

hi Becki

I've been visiting Greece for almost 20 years and, like another poster here, I've once seen a cockroach. It wasn't near our accommodation but crawling close to a drain in the town centre.

In Spain I've seen them everwhere including inside some hotels and those were usually 3 star jobs. I have a feeling the Greeks maybe spend more time and use specialists treatments to deal with them.

Hi Bill & 8ecki85star

it may be because of the shorter holiday season in Greece along with the different building design and methods of build. As well as the island situation in Greece maybe they just don't survive the closed season in large numbers from their natural prey. Greece does have large numbers of migrating birds each year and a fairly healthy wildlife population etc.

Even the villages & resorts are fairly small in comparisson to most other countries so all in i think this keeps the numbers down as i've never seen any Greece but, in Italy it was very "crunchy" underfoot when coming back to our appartment

I am so relieved by your replies-I don't mind one or two but they were everywhere in Lanzarote-exept our apartment!!Didn't realise Greece's season was shorter than Spains', we have booked to go to Zante on 30th August for 2 weeks next year. What sort of weather should I be expecting?

Hi Becki,

We've never seen any cockroaches either.

Our one and only visit to Zante was a few years ago, first 2 weeks of September and it rained for most of the time :(
BUT - don't let that put you off. This was a freak occurance - we usually go to Greece in early September and, with the exception of Zante, we've always had lovely weather.

in short yes you do, not seen as many as say spain or cyprus, but ha thats why hotels have lots of cats

We never saw any cockroaches at all in Greece, until this Sept in our apartment in Platanes, Rethymnon. Everywhere was clean though. We came back one night and as soon as we swtiched the lights on I saw these feelers behind the cooker area - it was huge and crawled behind the fridge - soon got rid of it.

Travelled the Greek Island s and 1 main land visit have seen 1 cockroch in all that time that was in Andros

Blimey! They must all be stalking me then! Although numbers do seem to be steadily going down. Only saw one this year (on Saturday night just gone wandering across the pavement in Kos Town), none on Patmos.

Definately saw more when I went to the Canaries though.

I think they must all be in Rhodes. In June we stayed in Ixia and walked
down towards the Trianda road. On the right, just before you get to the fork is a shopping centre. If you go onto the pathway towards the shops there are literally millions of them. They won't hurt you, but if they drop the dogs they are carrying .....

Hiya

When we went to Laganas, Zante mid September a couple of years ago there were lots in the street crawling up displays outside the shops  , however did not see any in our apartment or anywhere else come to think of it.

Dear All,

You have seen so few cockroaches because the snakes eat them.
Reply
Parky45 is quite correct. They won't harm you because they are normally too busy moving the cars out of the way to get at you.
I won't even mention the Symi spiders: they can eat a chair in one mouthful.

However, they are quite delicious with garlic and a little olive oil.

In all the years i've gone toGreece i have only seen one cockroach and that was when i stayed in Northern Cyprus.
I've seen plenty huge spiders and many other giant creepies though!
