If you got a reasonably modern machine and broadband, try downloading 'google earth' (for free from:http://earth.google.com/ ) (I'm using v4 beta version and it's fine) - it has a measuring tool. The resolution of the maldives isn't great in parts but you should be able to make measurements ok
