Rhodes? Maybe Pefkos which gives you a quieter base but you can travel into Lindos (or Rhodes town) for a change.

was going to say the exact same thing,an island with plenty to see and good public transport is a good way to introduce yourself to greek holidays,any of the resorts on the east coast of rhodes will be good but pefkos is probably the best for a couple who want to relax but also have access to some life and sights.

Direct flight or ferry connection, beaches important, ancient sites, would they be hiring a car ?
Might help to narrow the choice.
