For a really good value snack, you will find it hard to beat a джоб (pronounced 'Jop'), which is a toasted, split bread roll, filled with your own choice of grilled meat/kebapche/kyufte/cheese/curry, etc., plus your selection(s) from a wide choice of salads/rice/yoghourt/sauces/fries from around 1.5 Leva for what is laughingly called a 'small' portion - don't think I'd manage a 'large' one!
I love the typical Bulgarian starter: some salad (for example shopska) and a bottle rakia.

According to a Bulgarian friend, who owns a hotel in Evksinograd, that's not a starter Manfred, it's the only thing that most of his Bulgarian guests eat (or are prepared to pay for) - and then only to help soak up the rakia....

Hi Bev,
Difficult to give you an accurate answer as, just like here, food prices in Bulgaria have risen sharply (by local standards) since last summer. The resorts also tend to charge higher than normal Bulgarian prices for most things.
To try to give you some idea, the Bulgarian Cash & Carry chain, Metro, has packs of 12 x 1 litre cartons of UHT milk on offer this month, which work out at 1.43 Leva (around 57p at current exchange rates). A loaf of bread was available from under 1 Lev (around 40p at current exchange rates) last September but was rising due to poor harvests caused by the summer's heatwave.
Can't help on eggs, as my neighbours' hens provide any that I need.

Having just re-read that, I should clarify that 1.43 Leva is the equivalent cost per litre.
I'm sure that you'll have a great time!
Baldur
1.43leva per litre is extremely expensive for a Bulgarian to buy. It's about the same price in my local Tesco, and UK salaries and pensions are far greater than in Bulgaria.

Especially as you have to buy 12 litres to achieve that price.
