Hi,
We are going to Kefalonia the last week of June. Would I be right in thinking that we'll need plug ins for our room that time of year? Is it best to buy them locally or take them with you? We haven't been before, but got eaten alive in Skiathos at a similar time of year!
ours never comes out of the case when we get home as the OH suffers badly, i am usually ok [i take garlic tabs before we go] but did get bitten at the beginning of may in kos, i thought it was unusually early but with global warming and all that

We go to Kefalonia around the 10th June every year. We always take the plug ins with us and always use them. You can buy them locally quite easily so it really just depends if you ae trying to keep the weight down for your baggage allowance!
Neither of us have ever been bitten by mossies yet but i have seen people who have been eaten alive by them at the time we have been there. One woman i was speaking to had been bitten 17 times! she was in agony
Maybe i have not been bittten because i love garlic and spicy foods..................i'm not sure but one thing for certain is that i am not going to give them a chance. The plug ins stay!

Think its a good idea to take plugins anyway and also an mossie repellent spray to spray yourselfs before you go out in the evening. Also avoid perfumes as this seems to attract them.
We use a plug in for the room (although you can buy spiral ones which you have to light over there) and take a spray - best to be safe and not let the little blighters in with a chance of a free meal!!!
cheers

I did use a plug in in the room and also citronella candles on the balcony - never got bit once and they do like me. Also I take garlic tablets and use avon SSS woodland spray.
kefalonia is not too bad actually as it is a very dry island - not many fresh water sources so not many places for them to breed. still, there will be a few in the early evening so a plug in and some mossie spray will come in useful. they say to buy these things locally though as they sell the most effective kind for that type of mosquito locally. dont know how much truth there is in that but they do become resiliant to different things.
when the british ruled kefalonia for a brief the early 19th century, they drained all the marshes around the south of the island as at this time there was malaria in this part of europe and kefalonia was malaria ridden. if you are interested, there is a british cemetry from this time on the outskirts of argostoli, the capital of kefalonia. you can see lots of malaria and cholera graves. it is very well tended by the friends of the british cemetry and makes for an interesting place to visit. more info on top trips page of

Thanks for those links dotcommon, the info about the cemetery is really interesting. We have a morbid fascination for such places, and often stop to have a look, it will definately be on our list of things to see.
Incidently I remember visiting a cemetery just outside Skiathos town that was really nice. It was not a military cemetery and was very well kept, with a lovely setting on a small cliff above the sea. A peaceful place to sit before continuing the walk into town.

We have not suffered two badly in Kefalonia but do take plug ins but definately citrollia spray oil or whatever really believe thats the answer
How late in the year are the d*** mossies usually active? We normally suffer, regardless of the efforts we make, but this year we don't arrive until 7th October, and are hoping that the worst might be over by then.
Don't think I'm that worried about the mozzies anymore. Just been reading the link that dotcommon gave me about the cemetery, and one of the transcriptions of the graves was the tragic case of Private William Mills who got taken by a shark on Corfu in July 1847. Maybe I should be worried about bigger predators!
We were in Scala in July last year and never had a single bite and those mossies love the wife!
