The resort is clean and there is a small amount of building work being done but it is not by any means a building site.
There is not much in the way of entertainment in the resort but as said earlier it is accessible and not in your face all day.with the hotel being so nice we tended to go for short walks and base ourselves back home as we called it.
The beaches nearby are sandy and clean and not crowded which for a family are ideal.
there is a safety look-out which is manned during the day

The beach to the left of the hotel is about 1000 metres and forms part of a hotel. It is clean and tidy with lots of parasols. The Beach to the right is about 500 metres and stretches for about a half mile into Gouves a small town. The bit in the middle are groins and sharp volcanic rocks for sea defense. Whilst it was not dirty a bit more thought could go into tidying it up by picking up plastics bottles or general items washed up by the sea or left. Nice shops lots of choice and reasonably priced with easy access to taxis. Gouves and Kokihini are the nearest small towns to the hotel. There are half a dozen or so tavernas on the sea front all reasonably priced. Well worth a visit if you want quiet and under populated areas to just relax and enjoy the holiday.

The resort is a quiet place to relax if you want a party go to malia with the smarties club.
The beach is a 5 or 25 minute walk it depends on how far you can drag yourself down the long golden sands which are not over crowded with sun bed hire avaliable.
Not to many shops but why would you want to buy food to cook on holiday? Eat out! Go on give the missus a break as well. She may make it worth your while!!

in a quite area of crete, easy to get to the nightlife in hessonisos and malia by coach.

Gournes itself was a dump with a scattering of ok tavernas and restaurants. Building going on all over the place. Beach was full of rubbish and very small.
Gouves a 1/2 hour walk away was better because it was bigger and had more bars etc. Water Park 10min drive away and Aquarium 5 min walk. Water park was 20 euros each, Aquarium 8 euros each.
Get a car and drive to sample best places - Chania and Rethymo are a must.
Panormos a quiet village an hour away is more like the quiet life

It's a good location if you want a quiet relaxing holiday, and want to use it as a base to travel around. It is for people who don't like brash, over commercial touristy places.
There is a public beach near by, it isnt the best beach but the sea is beautiful and clean, amd again nice and quite and more local there than tourists.

Fairly quiet and clean resort several small beaches and with about half a dozen places to eat and a few bars/ snack bars. Just enough for variety, we found the medusa to be our personal favourite and ate there most nights the food and service was excellent.
Average 2 course meal with drinks 30 euros and plenty of choice (kleftiko a must).
A 10 - 15 min walk will take you to the bus stops where you can visit the different places i.e. Heraklion 2.80 euro for 2 adults, Hersonossis being the same, Malia and Aghios Nicholas both easily reached.
All buses (more like coaches) were fully air conditioned.
Overall quiet but nice resort probably more suited to couples as there would be little to occupy teenagers/ children. nearest beach was clean, sandy no pebbles sea was shallow, plenty of sun beds etc overall pretty good, ideal for a relaxing hassle free holiday, if you want to party hard then this is not for you, but Gouves a bit more lively is easily reached by walking or taxi (5mins)away and if you really want to party then Hersonossis is only about 15mins by taxi.

The resort was ok but needs a few more shops and some more entertainment for kids.

The resort was fairly quiet, but young people looking for a more lively atmosphere would be better going to a larger resort. The beach was clean with hundreds of free sunbeds, and was sandy rather than pebbly. The main shops are a bit of a trek and limited to souvenir shops and car rental places. The local bus route into Heraklion is really cheap at just e1.30 and is fully air-conditioned.

Kokkini Hani/Gournes is a small place. It is quiet and you need to be prepared to make your own entertainment. There are lots of small bars and tavernas. Our favourite taverna is Taverna Manousos (first on the left hand side of the road as you go into Kokkini Hani). Our favourite cafe bar is Avra (go to see Manos and Georgia) There are lots more places that we could tell you about. Make sure you explore on foot/bus/car so that you can see what real Crete is all about. If you are limited to walking it is still surprising what you can find within 15 minutes in different directions from Golden Bay.
