We returned to the Platja D'or after a years break for our ninth visit. We have seen this hotel in its may guises from Thomson Sun, Thomson Gold to now Inclusive. The Hotel is now a very poor shadow of what used to be.The Food as mentioned in previous reports is repetative, boring and sometimes cooked to a poor standard. The original Staff are all but gone either from cost cutting but more likly to have left due to hotel going downhill. The Bar is a joke, having to que in line and shuffle down the bar to get a drink just like Oliver Twist.
The reason this Hotel has gone downhill is due to going fully inclusive as measures have been put in place to cost cut at every oppertunity.Thomson get your act together and return the Hotel back to its former glory

The food was very repetitive and the majority of the crockery was chipped, there were signs advising that areas of the dining room buffet would close at a certain time ie 20.30 but it was closed at least 20 minutes earlier. We also felt that we were more of a nuisance than a customer - whilst eating our starter the waitress was placing a clean tablecloth, clean glasses and cutlery on the table next to us (to be put on our table when we were finished - we really felt unwelcome and that we should hurry up and finish our meals).
The snack bar was manned by one person, who was unable to keep up with the demand, and would then point at his watch at the exact minute the snack bar was to close and tell the waiting queue that the "snackbar closed" irrespective of length of time spent in queue.
We have been at "all inclusive" hotels before but this is the first one where the bar closed when the all inclusive time expired.
At breakfast and lunch, certain areas of the dining room where cordoned off because the tables were prepared for the evening meal (it was the same number of people for every meal!)
We found this hotel to be very poor for a "Thomson Gold".
The dining room and the brochure mentioned that there was a dress code but it was ignored by various people and nothing appeared to be said or done about it, also it was mentioned that there were no people under 16 allowed in the hotel - somebody should tell the hotel staff!
We made reference to the receptionist when we noticed that our balcony door had been left open 2 days in a row after the maid had been in (we were on the 1st floor) to have our door banged loudly the following morning the minute the maid started - I'm not saying that it was the maid just that it was an amazing coincidence.
You had to queue for every drink at the bar (only allowed 2 drinks at a time) especially as it got closer to closing time - you had to join the queue at 23.20 to make sure you got a drink before the bar closed at 23.45 sharp.
The hotel is dated and in urgent need of a "makeover", the beds creaked every time you moved and you could hear your neighbours turning in their beds.
This is one hotel I will not be back in and I am disappointed and surprised that it is classed by Thomson as 4T's = How & why I don't understand.

I booked this hotel as our friends had already made a booking here with their family and we were invited to join them. After booking it I checked on this site and was a little worried as most of the posts were negative but after returning all I can say is what a good hotel this is.

The rooms clean and kept clean every day small but comfortable and everything to hand.
The food was excellent and will appeal to the english taste, hot freshly cooked and replemished quickly. Meal times were quite short- Breakfast 0800-1000, Lunch 1200-1400 and Dinner 1900-2100 but these times meant you had to finish by the end times not start eating at say 2100 in the evening as the food was cleared away then but this kept everything running smoothly.

Terrace area had two pools one knee height for those not too keen on water but good for a cool down and the other larger with steps down into 1.5mtrs which over the length increased to 2mtrs just enough for a shallow dive. The area around had plenty of sun beds and a large grass area to the right had more sunbeds.

The bar area which opened at 1000 in the morning served coffee, beer and spirts till 2345 and another snack bar further around had snacks available between meal times such as burgers, hot dogs toasted sandwiches and chips.

Pool floor area was cleaned every morning before opening at 0800 by an army of ladies and all sunbeds and tables/chairs wiped down clean.

Evening entertainment was shown every night in a seperate building that was between the bar and pool area/terrace but this was no smoking so if you did smoke you would have to sit outside on the terrace but you could still hear and just see the acts from here. Normal sort of acts such as the Beatles, Freddie Mercury and a small area for those that like a dance.

Postion of the hotel was excellent if you like the beach, out the front door cross a small side road through a wooded glade and wow, there it was sandy, shallow clear water stretching for miles in either direction and only 5 mins walk.
If you turned right on leaving the hotel instead and then right again you would be on the main road where the normal shops with a handy supermarket could be found and futher up this road some places to eat out, not that you should ever find the need but good for a stroll.

Staff were friendly, rooms and general hotel areas clean, food fresh hot and varied and in the words of a previous reviewer this hotel just felt right.

We had visited the Platja d'or previously in 2005 and I was very concerned to read some of the poor reviews submitted from 2006. But these concerns were unfounded. It was every bit as good as our first visit.

The rooms were well furnished, although the bed frames did make a bit of noise when you moved on them in the quiet of the night and the mattresses were a little harder than I would have preferred (but this is an individual preference).

The rooms were well cleaned and the towels changed daily. The maids even tidied up our clothes and personal items that we'd untidily left lying around.

The restaurant food was well cooked and catered for most tastes, although variety from day to day was limited and tended to be repetitive over the two weeks we stayed. The snack bar covered the periods when the restaurant wasn't open, so you could always get something to eat during the day.

The staff were excellent and very helpful. When we stayed previously, it was difficult to get served at the bar. This time they had introduced a queuing system which meant that everyone got served in turn.

I thought that this was an excellent way to deal with the issue but some of the other guests didn't like queuing. We had a problem with the balcony door lock which was resolved within a couple of hours of reporting it.
The morning queue for the sunbeds was better than any comedy routine that you've seen.

Because the staff were cleaning, no one was allowed into the pool area until 8:00am. But guests insisted on queuing from about 7:00 to get their towels on the sunbeds. Then they moaned about the size of the queue!

We usually went to breakfast around 8:00 and then out to the pool around 8:30 -8:45 and there were always sunbeds still available. The Thompson team introduced a rule whilst we were there that if a sunbed was unattended for more than 1 hour, towels would be removed, because some people were depositing towels first thing in the morning and then going out shopping until lunchtime. This worked well and sunbed availability improved.

The daytime entertainment and sports was well organised but not well attended, despite the best efforts on the entertainment team. Evening entertainment was very good, with professional acts on most nights.

Our only word of caution for future guests would be to be aware that the majority of guests in June/July were quite mature in age! I would suggest that the average guest age was around 60 during our holiday - certainly not generally the 18-30 crowd.

We stayed at the Platja D'or from September 28th to 12th October, and the weather was absolutely brilliant!

We upgraded to a superior suite, and it was nearly on the beach, you just walked through the garden gate and you were on the beach.

The rooms were, I would say, average, with 3 bedrooms, lounge, fitted and equipped kitchen and 2 bathrooms. Unfortunately the room we were in was directly above a pump room, and it was broken so the pump was turning itself on and off 3 times a minute 24/7. It got very annoying especially at night!

There were also 2 balconies, the one at the front having 2 sunloungers and a table and 3 chairs. The view from here was amazing. The hotel itself was ok, nothing special, but clean. There's a large bar area (smoking allowed) and this also leads out to the pool and outdoor seating area.

The pool in my opinion is far too small and the area for loungers very small.

Food was adequate and always hot, with show cooking most evenings, usual sort of fare, beef, pork, lamb and kebabs. There's no shop at this hotel, or internet access, but newspapers are sold at reception. Bottled water is free for the asking at the bar if you want any for your room.

All this said, we did have a good holiday, and this hotel was much better than many others we have tried, the staff were very friendly and it just felt comfy somehow. We would go back to this hotel again, but we would not stay in block 5, as I think the problem with the pump has been going on a long time, and we were told to ask for block 6 or 7 for future reference.

Can't comment on entertainment as we're not into that sort of thing, we prefer to go out, but what we heard didn't sound too good.

We first visited the Platja D'or in May 2005 when it had just gone from Thomson gold to an all inclusive.

The room was small but ok. Staff were very friendly and always had a smile for you. The food was good with plenty of choice the entertainment was average so in September 2006 we revisited the Platja D

We had returned to the hotel Platja D'Or in Alcudia, Mallorca, flying out on 7th September 2006, for two weeks.

The hotel had deteriorated greatly from our previous stay, in terms of cleanliness, entertainment and safety.

I had requested a low floor quiet room, but found we were put in a room overlooking the pool (and main road), and the bathroom had a walk-in shower. The base of the door had a clump of fungus growing round it, no, not mould, fungus!! We asked for a different room and were able to change two days later. We were offered no help in transferring our belongings, even though I had a walking stick following a knee operation.

After the changeover, I went around the pool area to cool off in the shade. The plastic chair I sat on completely broke, and threw me to the paved area injuring my leg and neck/shoulder muscles. Nobody on the staff came to see if I was alright, even though my husband had taken the chair to reception. Another guest said that she had noticed other faulty chairs, and showed me three, the seat of one of them being split from back to front. The Thomson rep found five more cracked chairs herself. Another guest found more, making eleven cracked, dangerous chairs in all. This guest spotted the hotel management putting these chairs out again later. The rep said she was not surprised at this. The hotel manager had seen my husband fill out a report which the rep had asked to be put in her desk. This went missing. I have had considerable pain for the last six months, not being able to sleep nor walk without great discomfort. I have had to pay privately for physio treatment, and have had physio and acupuncture from the NHS. My last visit to an osteopath found that my hip had been knocked out of line, so maybe now I will get some relief. I find I have lost confidence since going to this hotel, and no longer want to go abroad at all.

Also, the new room we changed to had infestations of ants. The maid sprayed these, but the dead ants were left around the base of the walls in the bathroom for almost two weeks, thousands of them. The carpet in the room was not vacuumed at all I don't think. After my injuries, these dirty conditions did not seem so important. I have seen two people have bad slips on the bar/entertainment hall floors after rain, as the wetness was not cleared up effectively. One of the witnesses to my accident picked up an ear infection which the hospital said would have been picked up in the hotel pool. Following my fall, no-one on the hotel staff enquired after my condition, so for nearly two weeks they ignored me. The hotel rep organised a doctor to come to see me the following day, but the "examination" took place in the crowded foyer, and it took enough time for him to ask me, "Where does it hurt? Can you walk?, and Do you have any reaction to anti-inflammatory drugs?" He did not even look at, nor feel my leg. Maximum, three minutes. Response from Thomson...... Health and Safety measures in Spain are not as strict as in the UK. This hotel should have a Health and Safety warning slapped on it. I would never have believed that Thomson could condone conditions there. I would neither chose this hotel, nor travel with Thomson again

We stayed here after doing a weeks cruise.

Very disappointed with this Hotel for the price we paid. The food was like canteen food and very repetitive.

Glasses were sitting everywhere and the place was generally untidy.

The staff were overworked and under pressure. Thomson would need to look again at putting this hotel in their cruise brochure.

I would not recommend this Hotel to anyone.

All inclusive basis was very good at breakfast, lunch and dinner but very poor at the pool bar.

The hotel was very clean and the maids were very friendly.

The beds were really squeaky and the walls thin so could here people moving about in their beds at night. The air conditioning was broke and the staff were not that bothered. 6 staff left while we were there so for a few days the ques at the bar were very slow. Only got a fan the day before we left. Lots of people complained to the hotel and to the reps. There were no signs or information regarding how the hotel operated or what food you could acquire from the pool side bar.

The evening entertainment was very poor and not very entertaining. Very disappointed.

No rep from airport or to airport.

Pirate show a must. Best part of holiday.

We would not visit this hotel again. The guest were of all ages and very friendly. This got us through the holiday.

Beach is lovely and can walk for ages with it up to your knees. Great place to visit if you want peace and quiet.

We have just returned from two weeks at this hotel and we will not be returning. We were fortunate enough to have booked two weeks in one of the suites which had full air conditioning during our stay however, eating in the dining room was not pleasant due to the air conditiong not working which I believe had been the case for three weeks.

This may have been a contributory factor on how the staff appeared when serving guests rarely smiling when taking drink orders or clearing tables, the same lack of interest was also displayed in the main bar area, I was shocked at how they treated us, how dare they treat paying guests in this fashion and I have said this in a three page letter to Thomson holidays, I hope other guests do likewise.

At no time where there signs displaying or apologising for the lack of air conditioning when I complained to reception I was told they were also finding the situation difficult to work in, what I wanted to hear was they were doing everything within their power to rectify the situation, this I'm afraid I never heard.

I would suggest to anyone due to stay in this hotel check what the current situation is before travelling, trust me it was not pleasant.

The manager and staff would benefit from spending time in Turkey where they would see first hand what good customer care looks like.
