Anyone notice how many posts asking about guesthouses etc(myself included). Looks like a lot of us are thinking about going it on our own next season.
By the looks of of the way the tour operators are cutting back flights the local property owners may be getting a boost with other airlines picking up the slack.
Good luck to them I say.

Yes i think it's the way to go this year, i went on a package last year for the first time and i got a good deal but now they have doubled the same deal so i have went back to diy.
I have booked flights for 3 people and accomodation(2 rooms) and it still has worked out cheaper than it was for two last year!
i understand the big package tour operators have cut back flights by 1 in 7 this year as no one is paying the silly prices.....
i got a quote from CSM for £70 a night
to give an example for hotels, Guesthouses are from 500 /- to 900/- a room.

We have only gone package once, and the Monarch flight alone was enough to put you off!
The main reason we D.I.Y is you don't necessarily save money but get better value for money and flexibility. instead of 14 or 21 you can squeeze 23 days by leaving on a Fri night and returning Sun, fly on the day you want to and on a better flight, and get an apartment to suit with all mod cons, a lounge area, washing machine for towels & beachwear, full size fridge etc etc.
Mumbai Airport is not for the faint hearted but on reflection amusing, and I love the planning with D.I.Y holidays.

To be honest Mumbai Airport was dead easy compared to coming in to Dabolim on charter
Exactly what we do mids on tour chose our own dates for flights then wait for the perfect bargain and book. This year was £698 for the 2 of us to Goa with an over night stay in mumbai My hubby spends hours on the internet planning our holidays to goa its so much fun weve included a week at gokarna this year as well
Also a big plus is schedule flights much better than the cramp charter flights with free drinks and food
Mumbai airport is far superior to candolin with 10 mins the norm for going through immigration We wouldnt do it any other way

I think that a lot of travellers want to stay longer than the 14 day standard package, it is after all a long way and an expensive flight, the main advantage is the low cost when you get to Goa.
Why there are so few 21 and 28 day holidays is a mystery to me. Is it something to do with charter flight regulations ?
For this coming season we did manage to get some really competitive prices for hotels on the Monarch accommodation only site. We paid far less booking through them than approaching the hotel direct. At it's best price the Marinha Dourada dropped as low as £20 per night for two people B&B. which, together with our Qatar flights would have worked out at £1138 for 21 nights which takes some beating. We paid £1650 for the same dates with Thompson last winter and at the time of booking they wanted neary £2000 this year.

I think (if I remember rightly) there is (or was) a 28 day restriction on charter flight bookings, but I can't remember why (senior moment). Thats definitely a good deal Dave - I always try to get a 3 week booking for 1200 or less but it has been getting more difficult so well done to you.
By the way, would it be possible for those who are going DIY via the new Doha route to Dabolim to post their experiences when you return? I am not sure when (or if) we are going this season as yet but we would like to try this route a) if the prices remain reasonable and b) the transfer at Doha doesn't mean a lengthy wait/stop over. I was checking flights the other day and it was okay on the outbound flight but a lengthy stop over on the return which put me off a bit (price was good though)
- Thanks. Fizz

I'll certainly post our experience of Qatar Airways and Doha but it won't be until mid December. We were lucky in that our flights have minimal delay, especially on the return leg. When we travel to Kerala next March we have only 35 minutes to change flights so i'm glad to have had the chance to try the airport first !
I am also keen to know what they sell in the Duty Free shop at Doha as I'm after a new camera. I e mailed the shop direct a few weeks ago but haven't had a reply so if anyone knows............. !

sorry Dabolim airport:oops:
theres enough traffic jams on nerul bridge without making matters worse
I think you might mean the Mandovi bridge, relating to queues? Nerul bridge is the one just outside Candolim on the way to Betim and the ferry to Panjim, and I've never seen more than a few vehicles on it.
Is there a form of dyslexia that affects places rather than words?
Was talking about this area the other night -what is the name of the white church that you can see to your left as you go over the Nerul bridge going away from Candolim ? Cycled past it a few times but can't remember.Spike.
we always do d,i,y wherever we go. times to suit ourselves,,, stay as long as we like etc. we got guesthouse for 1st 2 nights 480r for 2 people, and 7 nights in cologna de braganza for £56 for 2 b*bdon,t know where we,re staying in goa for the rest of the hol but that only adds to the exitment.
Hi
Could anyone tell me how much it costs to get from Mumbai airport to Candolim, and how far is it? We are thinking of booking our flights independantly next year.
Many thanks

Hi froggles if you take alook @ http://www.makemytrip.com it will give you some idea as to the cost of the flights
also see if you can get a flight to goa via mumbai or doha as they have been very cheap just lately dont know if they still are but again worth looking into
sharon

p.s the flights take 1hr
Remember that if you book the internal flight seperately , especially on a different airline, you might have less luggage allowance than on the flight to Mumbai .
