I can only answer for Gozo, but in Gozo without a car, I would only recommend Victoria or Ghajnsielem. Ghajnsielem is close to the ferry, and good buses to Victoria - good place to check out renting (or buying) is

Thanks for the links. I have looked at the agents websites, lots of apartments/small houses we can afford, but we just need help and advice of quieter areas of Malta to concentrate our search.

I think we shall end up in Gozo eventually, but it's Malta to start with for us until we find 'our' place - but where?
