Flight Only / Airline and Airports

Discussions relating to flight only, airlines and airports.
It also makes you wonder how much the bond held with ATOL was........

This video link will explain.

I actually "feel" for this guy, he's either genuinely upset or a brilliant actor.
I feel angry that the price of oil or I should say the manipulation of the production of oil, is devasting the airline industry and other companies.....it's no help to the people who are stranded, lost their holiday or their job, but maybe we should start selling water to the OPEC countries for the same price as a barrel of oil and cut the foreign aid....let them feel what it is like to be held at ransom.

rant over

So sad for everyone involved in this saga. Now the Travel Industry has to sit up and take notice. For too long now some Travel Companies have been selling under market value chasing market share, in a mature market it doesn't bring profits.Maybe now the Industry will get back to proper pricing at a realistic level. As much as oil has gone up you can't keep blaming it on that.Everytime I shop something as gone up but I don't see the one of the supermarkets goIng under.I understand the frustration of being involved in this. This happened to myself and my family twice 17yrs ago.It really is very upsetting in the end I got nothing the creditor's were paid first.I hope that everyone gets something back.

That's because the supermarkets have a greater choice in the matter, they are the masters and pull the strings and are not being held to ransom, they have a choice of various suppliers, if one won't supply at the right price, then the supermarkets can go to someone who will and offer a better deal, which leaves the original supplier with a load of produce that he can't sell.
I agree there are other factors involved, but No company can absorb the recent increase in oil prices, something has got to give eventually, whether it means a drastic cut in their profits or the loss of the company.

Where are the airlines going to get oil/aviation fuel from, when it's a closed shop and a limited choice of suppliers, especially if they don't have an hedging policy.?
Anyway, after a death there's always vultures ready to pick at the carcass and profit from it....TUI shares have gone this morning 16.25.

Ryanair are not so generous.......

Basically, they have offered the use of an aircraft for CAA to use for repatriation then go on to say that it shows you shouldn't book with 'flaky' airlines !

Bet Stelios and O'Leary are studying XL routes to see which they can pick up......

This is not really a subject for discussion here on HT. It is an information and help site. I do however think that your comment requires an answer.

For many years the large TO operations have done very nicely out of the holidaymaker. The rise of the cheap flight operations gave lie to such claims as the air fare made up 60% of the cost of a holiday. Those who decided to go DIY once cheaper flights became available found the same accommodation as that listed by the TOs and saved a considerable amount of money. The small specialist TOs came on the scene and again undercut the big boys by as much as 40%. I have the quotes and invoices that prove it. What does that say about the big two?

Your suggestion of a return to proper pricing will only result in less people being able to afford the holidays on offer. We shall then see what happens to profits. But then there is also the knock on effect to consider. Most of the destinations have an economy built around high tourist numbers. If they are reduced then they also will suffer.

I have seen a figure of £110 million quoted as the debt of XL. There is no doubt that numbers 1 and 2 will have similar if not larger deficits. It really is a case of who can survive.

Perhaps if the TOs take a step back and look at their organisations they will see the light. Large unwieldy operations more interested in selling overpriced holidays and trips, instead of value for money and good customer service - and that is what you need for people to come back year after year.

The head of TUI/Thomson UK was interviewed today on TV and sounded extremely nervous when questioned about his own operation. The travel industry may need a kick up the rear end, but I for one hope it will be a positive one rather than simply turning it into something only available to a wealthy few.

The CEO did look so upset. But I think it's a feeling through-out of the whole crew which work for XL. None of us expected it, I don't think many people did really.

:rofl :rofl sorry to laugh but first a smack on the wrist for discussing something that isn't really for discussion on here, then a looong long reply? Ah well, I needed a laugh after the awful news today.

Kelly, so sorry for you and everyone else left in an awful situation by what has happened.

I have just received this communication from a subsidiary of XL; it may be of some help to those directly affected :
