We were in Goa for xmas 2004. We decided to stay in Ashwem for a night. On the way back from having a meal, we experienced the most terrifying event of the holiday.
As we walked along the beach we could hear dogs barking and running. They only started to get vicious as we approached. We were circled by at least 10 dogs!! We could hear them but in the darkness and with them running,we were unable to see them all.
Luckily, we had a torch and something distracted them. Myself and my 6ft boyfriend are not afraid of dogs but, we both found the situation scary.

It was a similar thing that happened to us on calangute beach my husband who is also not scared of dogs managed to frighten them off and he just tells me to not show fear, easy done if you are not frightened.
Don't you think the numbers are increasing quite alot, it was 3 years ago our first trip and compared to then the numbers had really gone up. I know on the beach in the day they are just too hot and bothered so they just laze under your sunbed until you notice all the massive bugs crawling all over them then you have to move them on.

easy way to get rid of the dogs on the beach, bottled water, generally shaking it makes them take flight but if they still persist just throw some over them they soon take off. Quite cruel but works well.
To see the effect just poor some cold bottled water over your head nearly gives you a heart attack

Couldn't agree more - they scare me whitless.
It got to the stage where I couldn't go and get the paper from the stand outside the clinic on a morning as some horrid mutt would follow me. I too am petrified of them and I know this doesn't help as I swear they smell fear.
Also, the noise they make a night is outrageous....I don't know where they get their barks from.....cheeky devils then just sleep in the day....some should be "culled" (is that the right word).

The noise they make at night is awful, as well as the crows in the early hours of the morning, I have invested in a good pair of ear plugs its the only way i geed a good nights sleep.
Quite a few of the stray dogs have been neuterd, you can tell by the nick cut out of 1 of their ears.

They are very noisy 
but i think their bark is worse than their 
bite they are just very territorial and will chase the cows, other dogs if they are on their patch

Dogs... They're a pain! I fly big kites, (when I get a chance) and they chase it and don't let me get it down, last time te bit it and tre it! - They can also be very agressive when in packs, especially if you're jogging or running, I've noticed if they start tis if you turn round and face tem they soon back down, they're ust trying to be 'hard' bt tend to be all bark and no bite...
They also come and poo in my garden which is really annoying!
But they're normally lovely animals who seem pretty content either enoying the company of other dogs(of the opposite sex), barking, fighting or sleeping!

Ohhhh loverly, loverly doggies - how can you all be soo cruel! No they do make a lot of noise barking at night and there was definately more this year. I have one that I feed who lives near our beach shack called - well - dog! Last year I called him Dainty Daisy but woops definately not a girlie - so this year dog! He has got very pampered this year as someone else feeds him every day and boy he was the best cow deterent on the beach - everyone sitting near me loved it - soon as a cow came nosing in my bag or whatever for fruit woosh he was off and so were they! Also this year he let me pat him and in fact became quiet confident and a bit of an attention seeker - ahh just booked for 31st Dec 2005 - can't wait to see him again...... I know there is one born every day!
May sound silly but just talk to them nicely and they will be fine. They are used to being shooed away by the locals (watch when a local walks down the beach how they bark) so a little affection their way is welcome. Not sure how you talk to ten at the one time though. Maybe get them to sit in a row.
That's fine during the day when your dealing with just one dog that really can't be bothered to walk more than a few feet without having to settle down for a nap again. In the evening though it's a different matter. We stupidly took a little short cut back to our hotel one night. A group of dogs formed a circle round us and were growling and barking that much that they wouldn't have been able to hear any words we spoke to them anyway. Luckily a couple of local guys came to the rescue with 2 large sticks and that did the trick. Needed extra beer to calm us down when we got back to the hotel I can tell you.

Well I love the dogs - they're what make the holiday for me!
Although I'm a mad dog lover, and I've studied canine psychology, so watching their interactions is really interesting.
Just been out to Goa with my 9 year old son and my husband, and we loved to sit out on our balcony at Calangute listening to them all carrying on at night.
And on the beaches we always befriended the dogs at whatever shack we were at. Then they watch the sun go down with you, and follow you on walks along the beach, so you never get hassled by dogs from the other places.
I admit, I'm a hard case though. I stroke and pet all the dogs, riddled as they are with fleas.
Snoopy was my absolute favourite, at Resort de Palolem. I think his real name is Jumbo, but he answered to Snoopy. He was great - even slept on our verandah!
Oh, happy days.

We have been feeding 2 dogs for years' beema' named by my son after our massage guy and' limpy' because well he has a limp, they wait for us at night because we usually take a doggie bag back for them and they appear in the mornings and escort me down to the beach. The only problem is when i put bread ect out for the cows they will appear and chase them away. 
I like dogs as much as the next person and i also feed them whenever we are out in Goa, but the number of them is growing and i can relate to those people who do have a problem with them especially when they are in packs, they can be intimidating .
I think what someone previously mentioned about having a cull is somewhat harsh
, but they do need controlling some how.
Neutering and (close your ears lads) castrating
would be a solution but your average Goan hasn't got the money for that so that wants addressing also, i have heard that there is some sort of animal charity out there 
.
The local police could also do what the Sri Lankan police force did and round some of them up and train them in various aspects of police work.
There are some sorry sights out there and i hate to see any animal suffer.

A lot of them are castrated now (the strays) see above 'nicks taken out of their ears' also i've noticed quite a few wearing collars with red cross or something similar on the ones that have been 'done'
