An excellent resort and B&B is the Alykanas Village Hotel in Alykanas just in the north of the island. The resort is quiet and low key with just enough to keep you occupied. I put a review of the accomodation on this site and the hotel have a website too. We booked with Airtours and they were excellent. Direct Holidays also go there and and a bit cheaper too i think.
Don't get it mixed up with the Alykanas Beach which is next door which is a Kosamer property.

If you want somewhere quieter and more relaxed then try The Asoria Hotel in Alykes - right on the beach, great sea views and a nice quiet, friendly resort for couples and families - you can't beat it.

Never been here before, fancy going for my honeymoon, is the nightlife etc ok here any reccomendations - all inclusive!

Also is the flight direct to Zante?

It's a british island, Costa del Greece style. Laganas has the most late bars and nightclubs, other places are some what quieter, such as Alykes. All inclusive is to be avoided. Flights are direct from all over the UK.

Alternatively there is a bus from Athens to Kylini and then a ferry, or a flight to Kefalonia and get the ferry from Pessada to a small port in the north end of Zakinthos, not far from the aforementioned Alykes.

CHEAP all-inclusive is to be avoided, as with anywhere. If that is what you are looking for the Louis hotels are top class. The Louis Zante beach is lovely.

Couldn't have put it better myself Ouzo, it's Britain with sun! Hardly a Greek feel to it at all. Far too commercialised even in the smaller resorts, I mean It has a Macdonalds!!! But unfortunately that seems to be what people want.

How much money would one person need in Zante for 2 weeks????

The hotel we want doesnt do 10 days and im trying to convince my boyfriend we wont need a lot of money...

It would depend whether you were self catering, half board, all inclusive etc.

A general rule when I go self catering is £50 (approx 70 euros) a day but it really depends on how much you want to do.

Sounds about right Steve. Been to Kos and Rhodes B&B, and allowed around €60-70 per day. Going to Zakynthos in May, SC, so reckon around €70-75.
As you say though it will depend on the board basis and how much they want to do when there.

Flights are direct to Zante though the airport leaves much to be desired.
For once I have to find myself defending Zante, I think the comments from Ouzo and Duffi are raher harsh.
Is there anywhere that does not have a Macdonalds? If there are such places be sure there might be one soon. You don't have to eat there.
Why do people accept things changing in the UK or the USA but think that the rest of the world should stay in a time warp?
The island still has beauty, the smell of herbs growing on the mountains fills the air and the sea is the most fantastic shade of blue.
I admit that catering for what some tourists want has done little to enhance the island but it is still Greek and the people living there do not consider themselves any less Greek than the inhabitants of more remote areas.
Is London less English than Stratford or Sunderland?
I think we must all accept that whenever we travel somewhere we are going to change that place and not generally for the better as far as retaining charm and character.
There are more Greeks now driving Mercedes and using mobiles and far less riding on donkeys and eating dolmades but that's progress.

I agree with spiros :D , even Bali has a mcdonalds  :P

but at the end of the day, if we are visiting such places, yes its great to see some old charm and lifestyle - I love to see it- But the locals in developing areas will see buisness opportunities in the visiting holidaymakers and adjust accordingly, and cater for the current market.

all islands cater for the holidaymaker to varying degrees, but there is still the old charm, taverners etc to be found just in some places you need to sniff them out a bit more :D

My boyfriend and i went to Zante in 224 and going again this august. Food is very cheap, you will most probably need about £100.00 per week per person.

Hi pinkladywales :wave
A couple of years ago i went on my own to Zante and set a budget of £600 for two weeks self catering. i took £300 in Drach's and £300 in T/C's.. overall i didnt hold back on the spending and i needed to go to the cash point on the last day and withdrew £100 because i was running low.

I booked all my boat trips (4) around the island with the Olympic reps (if i had booked independant i could have saved myself £30) Total was around £120..

Didn't have a breakfast everyday but, i did eat a lot of fruit instead..
Met up with other trippers and had some really good nights out and every night we dined really well with drinks etc then hit the bar street.. i went off to smaller villages in the daytime and had some good light snacky lunches and had a beer or two with the locals :D cheaper than in the resorts and quite often a plate of grilled fish and tomatoes gratis :D
daytime on the beach or swimming / snorkelling is free
i took a jetski out at at vasilikos bay £30 for 1/2 hour..
Hired a motor boat for a day to marithionisi island £80 shared between 6 and i left a healthy tip for the cleaner as she was brilliant and a thankyou for my rep as she was great as well..

********

Last year I got through about £1100+ two of us in two weeks..
and my holiday partner spent plenty as well..
we didnt set a budget on anything..
hired a jeep for a week..
we went horse riding..
went scuba diving a few times and did most of the above as well..

So if you set a budget you will spend less and it doesn't mean you'll be scrimping all through the holiday just go careful in the 1st week :D
i worked out i saved money by doing the boat trips as i was spending quite a lot in the nights but, with a boat trip i was in bed early (ish) for the early start..

Thanks everyone :)
I was thinking it would be around £600 each but hoping it would be less!!! Got some saving to do...

Want to go see the shipwreck and Blue caves, but also thinking of hiring a car for 3 days and touring the island...
Reply
3days car hire wont be too much its about £17-£20.00 per day. and dont book the boat trip through your rep do it in the streets.
