We went to Mexico in November, cash wise for tips we took 50 one dollar bills, these did indeed give us the little extras service wise.

Outside we bought clothes and a few meals and just used the card for this. All you will need extra are some Pessos for bus fares drinks from shops etc. We changed up some dollars for this at the hotel reception.

When we went to Cancun we opted for the pesos, it does work out far cheaper with local currency actually where ever you go you will get better deals with the countrys own currency.

Weather wise the temps in January are roughly in mid 20's daytime and high teens at night, some nights could get a little cooler so a cardie/jumper round the shoulders just incase.
