My first choice agent told me this week that it isn't included and that we have to pay.

We went to Mexico in November 2008 and had to pay locally. The cost was $50 each (I think). We travelled with First Choice, in 2007 the cost was included in the holiday price, but they changed it last year.

Thomas Cook now advising tax has increased to $53

Just received my flight tickets this morning to travel in August... Thomas Cook are now stating $56 per person age 2+ or in MXN Peso which is 625... This works out £30-

Can anyone please confirm that you are still able to pay the departure tax with sterling and that depending on exactly how much it costs, that you can pay the odd with pound coins?

Yes you can pay in Sterling and any odd pounds in pound coins.
