Just returned from the Oriental 13/9/08. Upon arrival we were informed the room was double booked and installed in a clean but basic, no aircon apartment owned by the Hotel Jupiter in the noisy part of Praia Da Rocha.Jupiter staff were very helpful ,Oriental staff were exactly the opposite, couldnt even tell us when we could return to the hotel- no apologies-even attempted to trivialise this problem as a minor glitch !!.Double booking is apparently commonplace in the Oriental we were informed by Jupiter staff.
.The Oriental is in a spectacular position, overlooking a fantastic beach.Hotel is clean, aircon is efficient, most apartments have a sea view.Room is cleaned daily, comfy rattan sunbeds make a nice change from the normal plastic type.
Food is the normal boring lukewarm hotel fayre, scrambled eggs, boney stringy bacon, german mini sausage etc etc. Most people eat it because its in the price of the accomodation- no self catering option.
Pool is tiny with only about 15 sunbeds set around it, the rest are in an large grassy area around the other side of the hotel
Room doesnt have a microwave, electric kettle or blinds on the bathroom windows facing the corridor !!
Service at the poolside bar/cafe is abysmal- you have to search out the staff to serve you.
Hotel has a problem with wasps around the pool and also with barking dogs in a nearby property. Dont take an alarm clock, you wont need it, you will be up before dawn.When i enquired if other guests were complaining about the noise the staff member told me "a few" then changed his mind to "none"
The Oriental could be sooo good, it appears the problems there could be easily resolved but unfortunately due to the indifferent staff- its not.
It appears to appeal to the older holiday maker but is definately not suited to the less mobile, young families or anyone that cant sleep through a dog barking 30m away.

Just got back from a two week stay at the Oriental. Staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble, and maid cleaned the room everyday and was always really friendly. Hotel was excellent. Don

We will be holidaying at this hotel again this year.We had a wonderful holiday here last time. The welcome was very friendly and we were taken to our room straight away. All the rooms have gorgeous beach and sea views. The rooms are also very clean and spacious with air conditioning and although its a hotel there is a lovely little kithenette with fridge. Bathroom have double basins and good shower and bath. Breakfasts were good with plenty of choice.
The hotel staff were very helpful and cleaning staff very good.
Pool was small and immaculate. Large garden at side with ample sunbeds as well as round pool.
Best of all it just a few steps to go down to fantastic beach. Near to all restaurants and bars but not noisy at night.
The only down side is very little evening entertainment, bar on quiet side. But hotel is in centre of resort so no problem finding somewhere to eat and drink.
