If you don’t mind the noise from the main bar area in the evenings then the rooms close to reception/around the big main pool are ideal as their close to everything, pool, daytime entertainment, restaurant, reception, bar etc
Rooms further back behind the gym are better if you have smaller children and prefer not to be disturbed by the evening noise. The pools further back are quieter and the middle pool has a nice splash play area for younger children.
If you have rooms on the lower level you do hear footsteps of people walking around above you.

Gran canaria is a very nice clean place. In Playa del ingles as you are aware its a gay place and not for children really. Saying that you can still have a good time with the children. Just be careful on the beach due to the Gay beach and the nudest beach. Watch for the lucky ladies and men who try to place things on you wrist and charge you between 20 and 50 Euro for them.
All in all it's a good place to go to but not in the Margritas Hotel deue to standards dropping.

Love Maspalomas have been 8 times, by far the best of the Canaries.
Some great restaurants in Playa del Ingles. El-Dukes is the tops.

Sonneland is just a load of apartments no bars or beaches in sight, very steep hills and mad car drivers, if in a taxi make sure you wear your seatbelts because we had many close calls and one actual crash

The resort has not been built yet, and is certanily a "work in progress" project. Once the area has developed it will be modern, clean and I suspect, catering for the more discerning traveller.

Maspalomas is a fantastic family friendly resort. The beaches are superb, and in the evenings it's great walking along the moonlit shores with the sand-dunes in the background.
There are plenty of shops and market stalls together with a wide variety of bars and restaurants, offering everything from local to Italian, Chinese, English, and German dishes.
A fantastic place to visit.

We only stayed for a week so we didn't do too much exploring.
We found the Faro Centre which was about a 20 min walk away over busy roads not as nice at the Faro 2 (Lighthouse) shopping centre.
Beware of the time share touts at the lighthouse (they are very convincing!).
Nice quality shops at Faro 2 and cheaper perfume and cigarettes than Faro 1.
Siox City was a good evening out (although possibly cheaper to go by taxi than pay through tour rep (£95.00 family of 4)
"Blanket trip" was a freebie and a nice few hours out of the resort.

I found Maspalomas quite quiet but we did go out to Playa Del Ingles which does have many bars and the night life is great! To reach many places in Maspalomas you have to get a taxi but they are very cheap ranging between 2-4 euros to playa Del Ingles and the shopping centres.

The resort overall was very impressive. If you wanted to get a taxi to the neighbouring resort of Playa del Ingles this would only cost you 4 euros. The entertainment was very amusing. Most of the time it consisted of the entertainment team doing dance routines to popular music and doing shows such as Music through the Ages and Music in Cinema. This resort had a very very high ratio of German. Our Rep told us that the Riu organisation was German owned and so could explain the popularity with the German holidaymakers. Believe me their presence was known - by 8.45am they would be either putting out their towels on sunbeds or even slapping on the suncream ready for a whole days worth of sunbaking! Besides this we always managed to get a sunbeds.
