Overall a very clean hotel. The resort itself not much to it as very poor country. Very much a shanty town and beware if going on trips there is a major road upheaval and we were stuck in traffic for 2 hours on arrival after a 8 hour 15 min flight.

The beach is nice but not truly carribean there is a beach bar at Mambo but not at other 2 hotels.

The Beach has some shingle/shells at the shoreline so can be a bit tough on the feet...might want to take some shoes that you can swim in to protect them

Resort Animation Team were nice and if you told them you were not interested in joining in they left you alone.

The place was very well kept and maintained.
The animation team excelled in their shows.
The beach was great, you could use any of the beach and eat at any hotel but our dinner had to be at the Merengue.

The town was really good. They sell wicked clothes and shoes. All the shops sell amber which is really pretty. We went into the town on a night sometimes and in the day when there was a bit of rain.

The surrounding area is quite poor and you wouldnt realy go wandering out of the complex but this is only cos theres no where to wander too. we went to the sea life center (ocean world) cheaper to book before you go but other trips can be cheaper there. We had 2 fantastic days here , we played with sea lions and dolphins . Just be aware there is a timeshare thing going on and we got roped in (no its not time share , just a new hotel that they want to show you and whisk you off on a golf buggy ) dont be fooled , it is time share and takes a couple of hours off what was a great day. The time share people are so friendly at first then when you have gone through all the crapp and said no, they ignore you. The food at Ocean park is realy nice and makes a change because it is different .

Peurto Plata is not the sort of resort that you wander around in alone. Our tour operator recommended that we only took escorted excursions as the town itself was considered unsafe for tourists. The resort is only for people who like to remain in the hotel complex.

If you are not happy with this resort then you had better stay at home.Or go club 18-30. This is not a drink as much booze until you drop down in a stupor type of resort. It is a very chilled, relaxed, quality type of experience in the Dominican Republic. The sea is not blue/clear and do not spend at lot of money on a trip to snorkel on the reef. The reef is dead.
I would go again on my own, because it is excellent value for money (I paid £500 for the week with flights)the weather is good, the sea was warm, the resort pool huge, the food was fresh and good quality, hardly any british people, safe, secure, and totally stress free.

We spent most of out time at the main pool where the entertainment was water aerobics, volleyball etc...

The entertainment was quite good they asked for volunteers they had a Mr & Mrs competition one night which was so funny congratulations Alan and Nicole on winning it was brilliant.

Along the beach there are a few sellers with jewellery paintings etc you have to barter with them basically just half whatever price they say.

We did the mega truck trip which I would recommend it was a great day out we took some sweets and pencils paper etc for the local children which were all well received.

the resort had many shops all the same really, go to the liquidation shop its cheap and its where all the lucky lucky guys get there stock and try to sell it onto you. there are a few bars jose osheas is good for food and drink. i am not a beach person but did try it for a few hours, be carefull with the kids in the waves they can knock you over, it can get windy in the afternoon and the kitesurfers are out in great force but its great and nice to swim in once you get past the waves. at the time we left they were changing the colour of the sand to white i assume this will have been completed by next year.
