Sorry for the late review on this one. I've only just registered on the site!

We stayed at the Portobello in October 2005, and have to say I wouldn't rush to stay here again. We have always booked our holidays by working out which hotels can sleep 6 in one room (because of the childrens ages) and then gone for the one that has most to do for the kids. We like there to be kids clubs and enough entertainment in the evenings that we don't need to leave the hotel. If you want this too, this hotel is not for you. It may have been because it was the end of season, but there wasn't much at all for the kids to do apart from the thomson kids club (which was good) but this was it.

We stayed the last two weeks in October, and paid more for the second week because it was half term. This week was awful! Marmaris closes down at the end of October and the hotel was packing down around us! Most of the facilities were withdrawn INCLUDING THE WATER SLIDES which was the main reason we chose the hotel! After 4 days of no slides in operation, us and many other parents just allowed our kids on them. They were tipping water down themselves to make the slides wet and had a great time. Hotel staff were going mental, but we ignored them and every time they came and told the kids off, the kids stopped it, and then 20 minutes later the kids were back on them again! It actually ended up as a bit of a game! Us parent were past caring how angry the staff got. It is ridiculous to expect children to look at the slides and not let them on them, and all because they couldn't be bothered to get one person to stand there.

Entertainment during the day was zero. Not even a pool competition or game of any sort at all the whole time. The only evening entertainment was a half hour mini disco every night with the same games and same 4/5 songs. This is the only holiday where us and our children were in bed every night by about 10:30!!

Along with this for at least the last 10 days they ran down all their stocks. Including having no milk or bread in the shop, no ice creams for sale and they even defrosted all their freezers throughout the hotel. The restaurant had less than half the things on their menu, and even worse refused to get any more ketchup! The last week we actually bought ketchup that we could take to the restaurant! The turkish bath was never open the whole time we were there, computer room was packed away in the second week and so on. All the kids ended up with a nasty rash that bled from using the pool (I think the chlorine or chemicals used). I could go on and on! I had a huge list of complaints which Thomson refused to acknowledge on return from our stay, even though the rep signed 6 pages of complaints forms in resort and said we should get compensation!

With regards to rooms, there is an old block and a new block at the Portobello. We got the new block. It seems that generally Thomson guests do. If you have a family room you sould be ok. Our room was ok, but nowhere near the best we've ever had.

My advice to anyone looking for a holiday to keep their kids amused, is to look elsewhere. We quite liked Marmaris but wouldn't use this hotel again, and would definitely not go to Marmaris again in October, due to the closing down. This affects even the shops outside. On our way back to the airport for home (I think it was 1st November), at least half of the shops in Marmaris were closed down for winter. We weren't told of this when we booked. Obviously things may be better in high season, but I won't be trying to find out! Hope this review helps!

This hotel was brilliant! The staff were always happy and will do anything for you,the rooms were spotless, the pools were clean and the kids loved the water slides.

The main pool area is quite busy but there are 2 quieter pools to sunbathe around which are lovely.

The food was ok for a snack at lunchtime or you can have the kebabs that are served round the pool every day which are lovely and we didn't have a dodgy belly once.

The best place to eat has to be Reina, the waiters are the best in Marmaris.

All in all this was one of the best holidays we have
had and we can't wait to go back again.

We stayed at the Portobello Apartments in Marmaris. We stayed in C block which was basic but clean enough.

I thought it was a bit much to pay for air conditioning which cost us

We stayed in the Portobello hotel it was really nice we had a room in the new block over looking the pool. We had some reserves before going, after reading some of the reviews on this site some of the other guests who had booked through other companies were complaining because they had been put in the old blocks and some were paying to upgrade to the new blocks

Having been to Portobello apparments in 2002, we cancelled a holiday to Salou in July 2005, to bring them to the Portobello apartments in Turkey as thought kids would enjoy it.

On arrival at the appartments 2.30am in the morning we were taken to what we thought would be our apartment block only to be taken to the old reception and to be placed in D Block. Having seen it we refused and handed keys back to reception, room for 4 plus cot space where I dont know joke. Walls filthy, mould all around shower room wash hand basin toilet, ceiling ,curtains had marks on them childrens sleeping arangements should have been burnt not fit even for an animal.

Returned to bar area to find several other families also refusing to stay in rooms we were all told by reception staff seek reps in morning therefore stayed out at bar all night with kids sleeping on sun loungers with beach towels. We spoke to our Thomson rep who we could not fault as she was dealing with each family who managed to get us moved to the L block on Monday we feel sorry for reps as they are the ones who have to pick up the pieces and not the Tour Operators nor hotel management this is a major issue. Should be dealt with Health and Safety issue big time would not be returning very very disappointed.

Arrived at hotel at 1am to find we had to pay for air con and extra for your toilet paper.

We had no glasses in room drank out bottles for 3 days after waiting for a rep to sort it out, but a rep with another company had to get glasses for me.

My daughters loved the flumes, each day the prices for the snacks around the pool differed, (I think they made it up) they even charged us

Make sure that you pack an alarm clock - we had to get up no later than 6.30 to get a sun bed, they were gone by 7.00 !! We then had to take it in turns to sit on the beds until about 8.00 when they had finished cleaning the pool.

There are a lot more guests than sunbeds in this hotel, and the concrete is very hard and uncomfortable if you do not get a bed for the day - also the beach is 10 mins walk away and you have to sit on the cafe sunbeds there and pay extortionate prices for drinks all day.

The new block apartments are very nice, but the air conditioning is a rip off, as is the safe. The old block is absolutely horrible, and not safe - there was a fire there and the smoke alarms didn't go off.

Bar and restaurant are ok, Turkish night expensive and not worth it.

Lots of ear infections from the pool, kids loved the slides but found the pool too deep @ 1.65m with no shallow end. Take arm bands for the not so strong swimmers. There is a baby pool which is very shallow, no good to swim in but alot of fun for the little ones. Pool area is extremely slippery, make sure that the kids have got something on their feet, I saw lots of children (and adults) having a nasty fall.

Overall I was very glad that we were not in the old block, kids enjoyed but we came home feeling exhausted from the lack of sleep. It is very noisy in the nights and we had to get up at 6 every morning.

Call that a holiday - I don't think so !!

Glad we booked a two room apartment with Thomson. This was modern and quite spacious and the two bedrooms gave a lot of space. Shame about the cost of the A/C (320 TL) for the two weeks, chargable on top.

Pools clean and although deep and slides great for kids and surprisingly not too crowded.

Shame the poolside bar only had one CD, which they played over and over and over again. Thankfully copies of this were for sale (burned onto CD's), although unfortunately I forgot to buy a copy (shame).

Luckily the rooms are double glazed, which helped with the traffic noise, of if you were unluky enough to have a pool side room with "the infamous CD!!"

Despite signs stating "No reserving sunbeds", if you didn't get one by 7.30am, forget it for the rest of the day. Amazing that some towels remained in place, alone and unloved for most of the day and you cannot blame the Germans for this, as they have aleady had the sense to abandon what is becoming a "tourist dependent" part of Turkey to us Brits.

Still overall an enjoyable time in a nice apartment. The local "maids" are brilliant and seem to replace the towels more often than is promised, and even give you free toilet roles, even though you are supposed to pay for these.

One question - Were we the only people staying here who didn't smoke???

Oh yes, the idea of having a Thomson welcome meeting as a boat trip was great, albeit there trips are more expensive than the local one. Dalyan check-out is a great idea for the last day, and the local guide employed for these trips was brilliant!

Would we visit this hotel again? Yes, but only if they could move it out of Marmaris!

We arrived at 12 noon after a 5 hour delay we were given a post card off our reps telling us about the welcome meeting so because we had been delayed we had to go to another hotel for the meeting. Waste of time really. We were told it was
